Position Title: Senior Design Engineer / Principal Engineer (Transformers) Job Summary The Senior Design Engineer / Principal Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and technical integrity of transformer products across the organization. This role serves as a subject matter expert in electrical and mechanical design, ensuring products meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements. The Principal Engineer will drive design standardization, support complex and high-risk projects, and partner closely with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure seamless execution from concept through production. This individual will play a critical role in advancing design methodologies, mentoring engineering teams, and supporting innovation across the transformer portfolio. Key Responsibilities Product Design & Technical Leadership Lead the design and development of power and distribution transformers, including core, coil, insulation systems, tank structures, and thermal management systems. Own design calculations and validation for electrical, mechanical, and thermal performance, ensuring compliance with industry standards (IEEE, IEC). Serve as the technical authority for complex or non-standard designs, providing guidance on design trade-offs, cost, and performance optimization. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with manufacturing engineering and production teams to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, efficiency, and repeatability. Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and cost optimization initiatives across product lines. Support production teams in resolving design-related issues, including root cause analysis of field or shop-floor challenges. Standardization & Engineering Excellence Develop and maintain engineering standards, design guidelines, and best practices across transformer product lines. Lead efforts to standardize components, materials, and design approaches to improve quality, reduce cost, and shorten lead times. Ensure accuracy and consistency of engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, and design records. New Product Development & Innovation Lead or support new product introduction (NPI) efforts, including concept development, prototyping, validation, and production release. Participate in first article builds and design validation testing to ensure product performance and reliability. Drive innovation in materials, design methods, and product configurations to enhance competitiveness and performance. Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement Lead root cause analysis for design-related issues impacting quality, performance, or manufacturability. Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on design efficiency, cost reduction, and product reliability. Act as a senior technical mentor to design engineers, fostering development of engineering capabilities across the team. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline (Master’s preferred for Principal level). 8–15+ years
of experience in transformer design or closely related electrical equipment. Deep understanding of transformer design principles, including electromagnetic design, insulation systems, thermal performance, and mechanical integrity. Strong knowledge of applicable standards (IEEE, IEC) and industry best practices. Proficiency with engineering design tools and CAD platforms (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, or equivalent). Experience collaborating with manufacturing teams and supporting production environments. Proven ability to lead complex technical projects and influence cross-functional teams. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Travel Up to 10% travel between plant locations as needed to support design implementation, validation, and production alignment.
