Principal Machine Learning Scientist (US Remote) We are looking for an applied science group member with experience in deep learning and software engineering to develop and deploy cutting‑edge ML models that influence global education products.
Responsibilities and Requirements
Research and develop Machine Learning models, optimize for production usage.
Work with AI, engineering, product, marketing, sales, and support teams to identify problems and propose ML/AI solutions.
Assist with ad‑hoc tasks as a team player.
Curate and generate high‑quality datasets using responsible data collection, design pipelines, and ensure data quality.
Investigate model weaknesses in production and implement pragmatic fixes.
Modify and fine‑tune off‑the‑shelf models or build novel models, including use of LLMs via API, prompt engineering, agents, and locally hosted LLMs.
Stay current through research papers, experiment new methods, and share findings.
Write clean, efficient, modular code with automated tests and documentation.
Recommend technological choices and explain them to the organization.
Assist downstream teams in productionizing work and ensuring release into product.
Communicate insights, model behavior, and limitations to peers, subject matter experts, and product owners.
Publish and present research work (including peer‑reviewed venue submissions).
Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, Machine Learning, applied math, or related field, or outstanding achievements.
At least 10 years industry experience in Machine/Deep Learning, Computer Science, and Software Engineering using the Python ecosystem.
Strong understanding of the mathematics and theory of ML and deep learning.
Academic publications in peer‑reviewed conferences or journals (preferably A/A+ rated).
Knowledge of language models, training/fine‑tuning, and familiarity with industry‑standard LM families.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Fluent in written and spoken English.
Would be a plus
Experience with software development proficiency in an applied science setting.
Experience working with text data to build deep learning and ML models; experience with vision or speech is a strong bonus.
Computer Science educational background preferred over statistics or pure mathematics.
Understanding of deep neural network interpretability.
Experience with advanced prompting/agentic systems, LLM fine‑tuning or training on industry platforms.
Showcase previous work (website, presentation, open source code).
Familiarity with coding for at‑scale production.
Compensation The expected annual base salary range for this position is: $147,300/year to $245,000/year. This position is bonus eligible / commission‑based. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer if extended, and is determined by work location and other relevant factors.
