Determines staffing needs and schedules for 24 hour coverage of patient care needs.
Supervises the assignment of patients and allocation of nursing staff according to patient needs, patient acuity, and staff skill mix.
Functions as a clinical consultant for patients, families, department staff, physicians and other hospital departments. Troubleshoots clinical and operational matters collaboratively.
Participates in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of staff for the operating room.
Plans, coordinates and participates in clinical education including orientation of new staff and education to meet learning needs of staff.
Provides direction and assistance to students and faculty.
Mentors and coaches staff toward professional growth and development. Completes performance appraisal process for technical and support staff (i.e. assistants, aides, unit secretaries) as assigned in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Assists with performance appraisals for RNs and others as requested.
Provides recognition and retention activities in conjunction with the Nurse Manager.
Monitors and ensures staff/unit compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements and professional standards. Participates in the review and revision of department policies and procedures.
Acts as a liaison between staff and management.
Participates in the development and implementation of the department performance improvement plan in conjunction with the Nurse Manager and others as relevant.
Executes the duties and responsibilities of the Nurse Manager in his/her absence. Assumes "on call" responsibilities when covering for the Nurse Manager.
Maintains a clinical practice by providing direct patient care when needed.
Oversees the preparation of supply requisitions and inventories equipment and supplies.
Participates in the Clinical Ladder Program as knowledge and expertise develops.

Education/Experience Minimum Required
A graduate of an accredited school of Nursing Bachelors in Nursing or evidence of planned completion within two (2) years Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience
Preferred
Bachelors in Nursing Previous experience in relevant nursing practice setting Previous experience in a supervisory role
License/Certification Minimum Required
Current New York State Registered Nurse License CPR within 3 months of hire Completion of professional certification in the relevant specialty practice as soon as eligible (generally after 2 years of experience in the specialty)
Preferred
Current professional certification in the relevant specialty
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office environment and patient care areas which require working in proximity to other employees and patients. Rooms are air conditioned and heated. Frequent walking, standing, bending and lifting. Fast paced environment with frequent interruptions. Exposure to equipment cleaning solutions and disinfectants.
PPE (Eyewear, Masks, Face shields, Shoe covers, and Gloves) as required by UHS Hospitals Infection Control policies. Age of Patients Served
