Job Description
As a Mechanical Systems Installation Design Engineer, you are responsible for the detailed design and integration of mechanical systems within aerospace platforms. You develop installation layouts, ensure compliance with technical specifications, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver designs that meet safety, performance, and regulatory requirements. The role requires a thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles applied to aerospace systems, with a strong focus on installation feasibility and maintainability.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Design and develop mechanical system installation layouts, ensuring compatibility with existing structures and systems. Create detailed engineering drawings, models, and documentation using industry-standard design tools. Conduct technical reviews and provide design solutions to resolve integration challenges. Collaborate with electrical, structural, and systems engineers to ensure cohesive system integration. Analyse and interpret technical requirements, standards, and regulations relevant to aerospace mechanical installations. Perform design verification and validation activities to confirm compliance with project specifications. Support manufacturing and installation teams through the provision of clear design intent and technical guidance. Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives. Maintain accurate records of design changes and maintain configuration control throughout the project lifecycle. Ensure all design activities conform to health and safety standards and environmental regulations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Proven experience in mechanical systems design within the aerospace or aviation industry. Proficiency in computer-aided design software, such as CATIA. Strong understanding of aerospace standards, including but not limited to BS EN, ISO, and aerospace-specific technical standards. Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Familiarity with project management principles and the ability to manage multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering. Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration. Experience with installation design for cabin systems, environmental control systems, or propulsion-related mechanical systems. Knowledge of finite element analysis and structural mechanics principles. Experience working within regulated environments such as the Civil Aviation Authority or European Union Aviation Safety Agency requirements. Familiarity with Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
Experience
A minimum of five years’ experience in mechanical systems design, preferably within aerospace or a closely related engineering sector. Demonstrated track record of delivering complex mechanical installation projects from concept to production. Experience in liaising with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure design feasibility and quality standards.
Knowledge and Skills
Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles as applied to aerospace systems. Familiarity with materials selection and manufacturing processes relevant to aerospace mechanical components. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex technical data. Competence in using engineering simulation and modelling tools. Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively. Understanding of health and safety legislation and environmental considerations in engineering projects.
Working Conditions
This role is based at the Filton site in Gloucestershire, primarily office-based with periods spent in workshops or production areas as required. Contract role with full-time hours, typically Monday to Friday. Occasional travel to supplier sites, test facilities, or other company locations may be necessary. Work involves use of personal computer and design software for extended periods. Compliance with relevant safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment when in production or workshop areas
