*Quality Assurance Engineer*
_(Manual & Automated Testing)_
*About Rockfield*
Rockfield is a UK company, recently acquired by Rocscience (Toronto, Canada) with over 30 years of experience delivering market‑leading computational software and engineering solutions for the energy, nuclear and glass-making industries. Trusted by major global clients, including BP, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Rio Tinto, and Saudi Aramco, we have built our reputation on deep technical expertise and a commitment to solving complex real‑world challenges. From our office in Swansea, UK, we combine advanced numerical modelling and full‑physics simulation, underpinned by our flagship proprietary software suite, *Elfen*. Our products perform Finite Element modelling and simulation workflows, helping engineers analyse and understand challenging physical systems.
Our software is built primarily in *C++ *and *C *using the *Qt *framework, across a suite of desktop applications and shared libraries. We work in collaborative development teams where engineers take ownership of features from concept through release.
We are looking for a *Quality Assurance Engineer* to become an integral part of the development team, helping ensure that our software meets the high standards required for scientific and engineering applications.
*The Role*
This is a *hands-on QA role* embedded within the development team. You will work closely with developers throughout the lifecycle of a feature — from early design discussions through implementation, verification, and release.
The role will involve *significant manual testing*, developing an understanding of the product and its workflows. Alongside this, you will help expand and improve *automated testing practices*, building the foundations of a scalable QA capability within the company.
This role would suit someone who enjoys *understanding complex technical systems*, thinking critically about how software is developed and behaves, and helping establish strong quality practices within a growing engineering team. An interest in complex technical or engineering software will be highly beneficial.
*Key Responsibilities*
* Design and execute *manual test plans and test cases* for new features and product releases
* Perform *functional, regression, and exploratory testing* across multiple applications
* Develop and maintain *automated tests* to improve regression coverage and release confidence
* Contribute to the development of *test frameworks and automation strategies* over time
* Participate in *sprint planning, design discussions, and release readiness reviews*
* Work closely with developers to *understand requirements and identify potential issues early*
* Identify, document, and track defects with clear reproduction steps and supporting evidence
* Verify bug fixes and perform regression testing ahead of releases
* Develop and maintain *test documentation and coverage for critical product workflows*
* Help evolve QA processes, tools, and practices as the QA capability grows
*Required Skills & Experience*
* Experience in *software testing within a development team environment*
* Strong experience in *manual testing and exploratory testing*
* Experience writing or maintaining *automated tests*
* Good understanding of *software development and testing lifecycles*
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Ability to understand complex technical systems and workflows
* Excellent written communication for *clear bug reporting and documentation*
* Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing
*Desirable Experience*
* Experience testing *desktop applications*
* Exposure to *C++ based systems*
* Experience with *test automation frameworks, particular Squish*
* Familiarity with *GIT-based* *Version control tools*
* Experience working with *scientific, engineering, or modelling software*
* Experience with *CI/CD pipelines and automated test execution*
* Familiarity with *issue tracking tools* such as Jira or Azure DevOps
