IntelliScript is a practice within Milliman that provides health and life insurers with real‑time data and underwriting decision support tools via software‑as‑a‑service (SaaS). IntelliScript offers an innovative suite of products which interpret and deliver electronic medical data (such as prescription histories, diagnoses, treatment data, etc.) to help our clients make effective underwriting and pricing decisions. This role will serve as a hands‑on individual contributor with a strong emphasis on coding, platform delivery, and technical reviews. You will report to the Manager, AI & Machine Learning Engineering, and play a critical role in advancing our Models as a Service (MAAS) initiative, helping to modernize our AI and machine learning model delivery platform.
The role will contribute to complex data science projects requiring ML engineering expertise and knowledge of medical claims and Electronic Health Records (EHR). Leveraging expertise in GenAI, ML engineering, software development, and data science, you will deepen their understanding of current product capabilities and develop innovative solutions—such as advanced summarization and agentic workflows—to enhance them.
The Lead AI & Machine Learning Engineer will be responsible for developing, deploying, and industrializing sophisticated GenAI and machine learning solutions for healthcare, insurance and adjacent markets.
Key responsibilities
ML engineering efforts within the Models‑as‑a‑Service (MAAS) platform, ensuring high‑quality and scalable model delivery
Providing technical guidance, reviews, and mentorship to junior team members
Collaborating closely with the data science team, MAAS product owner, AI architect, and Manager, AI & Machine Learning Engineering to drive model and feature delivery from ideation through deployment
Ensuring the success of model‑driven products across both technical and operational dimensions
Hands‑on technical contribution to support the growth of MAAS and/or Data Science initiatives
What you will be doing
Lead end‑to‑end development, deployment, and maintenance of AI infrastructure and applications, from proof‑of‑concept to production and ongoing maintenance, ensuring seamless integration with IT, Product, and other departments
Collaborate closely with the Product Owner for Models as a Service, the AI architect, and other stakeholders to align technical and product objectives
Provide technical proficiency in AI/ML engineering and data science, including selection and optimization of frameworks, libraries, and tools
Development of MLOps, LLMOps, and AIOps solutions across the organization
Serve as an ML Engineer with deep expertise in driving innovative product features from concept to commercial reality
Peer review, audit, and enhance models and code developed by team members to ensure high standards and continual improvement
What we need
10+ years of machine learning engineering, GenAI, and data science experience in one of the following industries: healthcare, insurance, clinical trials, or similar fields
Experience working with machine learning engineering and data science projects across the full life cycle from identifying customer need, to completing proof of concepts, to model building and validation, to implementation
Ability to contribute to cross‑functional teams
Expert level knowledge of Python and SQL
Experience with other programming languages: R, PySpark
Ability to understand / read other programming languages: C#, Rust
Expert with cloud‑based analytical solutions and distributed computing (Databricks)
Expert with converting on‑premise solutions into cloud ready applications
Ability to create CI/CD workflows using Github and IaC technology (e.g. Terraform)
Expert with APIs, AWS Cloud Services and associated services (Lambda, Step Functions, AWS Batch etc.), and git
Strong programming aptitude (debugging, package design, dependency management, testing)
Understand how to build and design varying inference solutions (single and batch scoring)

Location The expected application deadline for this job is April 30, 2026. This position is open to remote work. Applicants must be willing to travel to the Milliman office in Brookfield, WI as needed and travel nationwide for meetings, conferences, and team events.
Compensation The overall salary range for this role is $147,400 - $279,680.
For candidates residing in:
Alaska, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York City, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, or the District of Columbia the salary range is $169,510 - $279,680.
All other locations the salary range is $147,400 - $243,200.
A combination of factors will be considered, including, but not limited to, education, relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, etc.
