Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in providing assistance and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring their well-being and enhancing their quality of life. This position involves working closely with clients in various settings, including group homes, assisted living facilities, and community environments. The DSP is responsible for assisting clients with daily living activities, promoting independence, and fostering a supportive and nurturing environment.

Duties

  • Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation.
  • Provide personal care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
  • Monitor clients' vital signs and overall health condition, reporting any changes to the appropriate personnel.
  • Implement care plans tailored to each client’s needs and preferences.
  • Assist with medication administration as required, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Engage clients in social activities and community outings to promote socialization and inclusion.
  • Maintain a clean and safe living environment by performing light housekeeping duties.
  • Support clients in using mobility aids like Hoyer lifts when necessary.
  • Document client progress and any incidents accurately in accordance with organizational policies.

Skills

  • First Aid and CPR certification is preferred.
  • Experience working in group homes or assisted living settings is highly desirable.
  • Strong patient observation skills to monitor changes in behavior or health status.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting clients with mobility challenges.
  • Knowledge of caregiving techniques for individuals with autism or other disabilities.
  • Familiarity with memory care practices and dementia care strategies.
  • Competence in cooking and meal preparation tailored to dietary needs of residents.
  • Understanding of direct support principles and practices within home health or hospice care settings.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with clients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Compassionate approach towards providing care while respecting the dignity of all individuals served. This position is ideal for individuals who are dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of others while working within a supportive team environment.
