Job Description Work Arrangement:
This position is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the office at least three times per week in Warren, MI or Austin, TX, depending on business needs. The Role General Motors is on the lookout for a Lead Embedded Software Test Engineer who will ensure applications meet GM's software and feature standards for functional, system, quality, security, performance, and architecture requirements. The engineer will play a key role in test planning, execution, and quality reporting of software applications through collaboration with component developers, external stakeholders, and integration teams. This includes crafting and implementing both automated and manual test cases and execution plans. What You'll Do The Lead Embedded Software Test Engineer will review business and software requirements, design verification plans, execute tests, log defects, and provide detailed test metrics and status updates to project teams. You'll need to have experience in platform and embedded system design validation, software test automation, and clear reporting of test results. Collaborate closely with architects, system engineers, developers, and project managers to ensure high-quality and timely project deliveries.
Help maintain optimal resource utilization across functional areas, identifying constraints and bandwidth limitations when necessary.
Engage with managers and technical leads to share information, clarify instructions, and assist in test strategy and process improvements.
Analyze requirements, derive test estimates, and produce accurate testing documentation.
Manage multiple projects and lead all testing activities on assigned features or projects.
Create test cases designed for automation, while still being able to execute them manually as needed; proficiency in writing automation scripts using industry-standard tools is essential.
Execute manual and automated tests, troubleshoot related issues, and effectively log and track defects.
Review the test plans developed by others and provide constructive feedback and support.
Evaluate and analyze test and project metrics, effectively communicating quality concerns and addressing testing blockers.
Develop test-execution plans, organize test suites, and suggest enhancements to testing processes through new tools, techniques, and methodologies.
Over time, become a subject matter expert in your component, system, and business processes.
Demonstrate accountability for modeling GM values and cultural behaviors, contributing to a winning culture.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) 5+ years of embedded software testing experience, preferably in mobile or automotive industries.
2+ years of experience in platform and embedded testing.
Excellent programming skills in languages such as Python or C++, with robust experience in validating platform and system designs.
Strong background in test automation tool development and scripting, with a willingness to engage in manual testing when necessary.
Deep knowledge of software quality assurance methodologies and various tools.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Self-starter, curious, reliable, quick learner, and comfortable in fast-paced environments.
Familiarity with Scrum/Agile software development processes.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills) 8+ years of embedded software testing experience with a background in mobile or automotive sectors.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, GitHub, and Artifactory.
Previous product development or testing experience in the automotive domain is advantageous.
Familiarity with Robot Framework is a plus.
Experience with vehicle communication network protocols (CAN, LIN, etc.) is highly desirable.
