BI Analyst 1 Overview:
The Analytics Engineer plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the specialty insurance industry.
As an Analytics Engineer, you will work closely with cross-functional teams-underwriting, claims, IT, and Segment Presidents-to deliver actionable insights, build scalable data solutions, and support the development of predictive models and AI-powered tools. You'll be responsible for refining Novacore's reporting infrastructure, identifying trends, and contributing to the design of data strategies that align with our evolving digital transformation roadmap.
Responsibilities:
Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse Analytics to ingest, transform, and standardize data from multiple program administration and operational systems. Develop and manage data transformation workflows using SQL (T-SQL) and Python/PySpark, ensuring efficient and reliable data movement across the Azure ecosystem. Build and maintain data lake architecture on ADLS Gen2 following medallion design patterns to support structured, governed, and analytics-ready datasets. Support the platform migration toward Microsoft Fabric or Azure Databricks, including adoption of Delta Lake, Spark-based processing, and modern lakehouse architecture. Implement CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps and Git for version-controlled, repeatable, and auditable pipeline deployments across dev, staging, and production environments. Partner closely with the Data Analytics and Actuarial teams to ensure datasets are structured appropriately for pricing analysis, loss ratio evaluation, exposure analysis, and portfolio performance monitoring. Build and maintain curated analytical datasets and data marts that serve as the trusted foundation for Power BI dashboards and advanced analytics. Establish and maintain data quality checks, validation rules, and monitoring processes to ensure reliability and consistency of critical insurance metrics. Optimize query performance and data pipelines to ensure efficient processing and scalable analytics as program volume and data complexity grow. Collaborate with Business Intelligence Analysts to translate business reporting requirements into well-structured, reusable data models. Maintain documentation of data sources, transformations, and business logic to support transparency and governance of Novacore's analytics ecosystem. Leverage Microsoft Purview or equivalent tools to support data lineage, cataloging, and governance initiatives. Contribute to Agile/Scrum ceremonies, supporting sprint planning and iterative delivery of data engineering and analytics workstreams. Support the evolution toward a centralized data warehouse architecture, consolidating disparate program systems into a unified analytical environment. Qualifications:
Bachelors-degree in Data Engineering, Data Analysis, Statistics, Finance, or other relevant analytical degree, preferred. 3 years of experience writing and optimizing SQL (T-SQL, complex transformations, window functions, query performance tuning). 2+ years of experience designing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines. 2+ years of experience with Azure Data Factory and/or Azure Synapse Analytics. Hands-on experience with ADLS Gen2 - data lake storage, folder/container structure, and access control. Working knowledge of Delta Lake - ACID transactions, schema enforcement, and table management in a lakehouse environment. Proficiency with Git for version control and collaborative development workflows. 1+ years of providing analytical insights and developing summary decks to business stakeholders. Experience building and maintaining data transformation workflows using SQL and/or Python Data analysis & trending experience with demonstrated proficiency in analytical methodologies, tools, and dashboard development to interpret, visualize, simplify and present/communicate data, analyses, results and findings. Demonstrated project management skills and ability to work independently to prioritize workload and handle multiple responsibilities, deadlines, etc. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities. High attention to detail to identify, evaluate and resolve data quality issues and reasonability check analytical results. Ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with senior leaders across the organization. Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills. Preferred:
Insurance industry experience. Exposure to Azure technology stack. Exposure to statistical languages such as R/Python.
