Pharmacy Technician

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Pharmacy Director


Job Summary/Objective:

The Pharmacy Technician assists in the day-to-day operations of the retail pharmacy, including the preparation and distribution of prescriptions. Performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission of Peoples Community Health Clinic.

Protected Health Information Requirements/Access:

  • This position will require the use or disclosure of protected health Information.
  • This position will use the Treatment class of protected health information.
  • Restrictions on the protected health information for this position will follow the Privacy Policies of Peoples Community Health Clinic, Inc.
  • Use or disclosure of protected health information not routinely available to this position will follow procedures assessed by or directed by management.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists Pharmacist in prescription order preparation/delivery.
  • Performs computer data entry and print functions.
  • Assists in purchasing of inventory.
  • Performs cashiering duties.
  • Performs private and third-party billing functions.
  • Assists Pharmacist as directed.
  • Assesses patients’ income eligibility for medication assistance.
  • Makes decisions regarding eligibility and facilitates assistance processes.
  • Maintains current knowledge of available assistance avenues and related policies/procedures.
  • Ensures patients’ accounts are properly charged.
  • Develops and maintains record of policies/procedures related to assistance processes.
  • Supports a service-oriented atmosphere in accordance with Peoples Community Health Clinic Mission and Philosophy.
  • Works to improve work processes and clinical outcomes including health disparity and quality improvement collaboratives.
  • Follows policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.
  • Assists in control of Peoples Community Health Clinic resources.
  • Ensures the privacy and security of merchant card transactions and data.

Competencies:

  • Intermediate language, intermediate math, intermediate reasoning ability.
  • Self-motivated to develop and maintain own competence as it pertains to the position.
  • Communication – listening, speaking, writing, and reading comprehension
  • Skilled in planning, organizing, adaptability, attentiveness to detail and flexibility of assignment.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Products (ex. Excel, Word, Access, Power Point) and Windows Platform. Must be comfortable moving within an EHR computer system regularly.
  • Takes direction appropriately.
  • Strong customer relations skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Work Environment/Personal Protective Equipment:

This position operates in a clinical setting, will be exposed to chemicals hazard to eyes, hands and torso, fumes and particulates hazard to respiratory system. PPE required.

Physical Demands:

This position requires frequent standing (67%-100% of shift); occasional walking (1% - 33% of shift); occasional lifting and pushing/pulling up to 20 lbs.; occasional carrying up to 10 lbs.; continuous use of finger dexterity and use of hands/arms for repetitive movement (67% - 100% of shift); frequent bending/stooping, squatting/crouching and reaching at, above, and below should level. (34% - 66% of shift); occasional twisting or kneeling (1% - 33% of shift); requires 20/20 near and far vision, color discrimination and accurate depth perception.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Typically work hours and days are between Monday and Friday,8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and some flexibility in hours is allowed. Responsibilities occasionally may require irregular hours as deemed necessary. This may include an adjusted work schedule, long days, and early morning or late evening hours in order to meet client scheduling demands. The employee must work a minimum of 40.0 hours each week to maintain full-time status.

Travel:

Occasional travel and driving are expected for this position.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma
  • Must be able to successfully pass a 10-key calculator assessment
  • Minimum of 1 year Pharmacy Technician experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology preferred.

Licensure:

  • Pharmacy Certified Technician required. Registered with Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Technician within 90 days of hire.
