Murphy is recruiting for a Senior Electrical Engineer - HV to work with our Energy and Industry team in Dublin.

What you will be doing:

  • Act as the lead technical expert for the design and implementation of high-voltage (HV) electrical systems, ensuring integrity, adherence to regulations, and optimal performance from initial concept through to energisation.
  • Develop HV system configurations, design principles, and project-specific electrical standards aligned with IEC, IEEE, and Eirgrid/ESB specifications.
  • Direct the design and approval processes for HV protection and control systems, including protection schemes, interlocking logic, and control frameworks for AIS and GIS substations.
  • Supervise the preparation and review of schematic diagrams, wiring layouts for protection and control, and single-line diagrams, ensuring they are technically precise and feasible for construction.
  • Lead comprehensive HV system analyses such as fault level calculations, protection coordination, arc flash assessments, voltage regulation, and load-flow studies.
  • Provide expert technical assistance during pre-commissioning and commissioning phases, collaborating closely with site teams through energisation and project completion.
  • Serve as the main technical liaison with clients, utilities, and Owner’s Engineers throughout the duration of the project.
  • Work in partnership with civil and structural engineers to guarantee substation designs accommodate all electrical equipment, necessary operational clearances, and layout specifications.
  • Compile and submit comprehensive design documentation for stakeholder and utility review and approval.
  • Develop procurement specifications for key primary equipment and HV components such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, earthing systems, and neutral earthing resistors.
  • Represent the engineering team in technical discussions with utilities and Owner’s Engineers.
  • Mentor junior and graduate engineers, fostering best practices and supporting their technical development.

What we are looking for:

  • Holds a degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in Power Systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a comparable high-voltage design position, preferably within a utility or high-voltage contracting setting.
  • Skilled in using design and analysis tools including ETAP, EPLAN, AutoCAD, CYMCAP, and Cableizer.
  • Demonstrates strong technical leadership and a track record of successfully overseeing engineering outputs.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others.
