Alive Publishing Group and Canada Wide Media are home to some of Western Canada’s most respected media brands, including Vancouver Magazine, BCBusiness, alive Magazine, and Western Living. We operate in a fast-moving, professional environment where accountability, discretion, and operational excellence matter.

Reporting directly to the Group Vice President, we are seeking a seasoned HR Operations Manager to own the day-to-day execution of our Human Resources function across multiple brands and locations. This is a hands-on role for a confident HR professional with strong HRIS experience, sound judgment in employee relations, and a deep understanding of BC employment legislation.


Key Responsibilities

  • HR Operations & Employee Lifecycle Management
  • Lead full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes.
  • Administer performance management cycles and documentation.
  • Maintain and update employee policies, handbook, and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure consistent application of company policies and employment standards.

HRIS Administration – BambooHR (Pro)

  • Serve as primary administrator and system owner for BambooHR.
  • Manage system configuration, workflows, permissions, reporting, and data integrity.
  • Oversee employee records, PTO tracking, performance forms, document management, and compliance files.
  • Generate HR metrics and reporting to support leadership decisions.
  • Continuously improve system efficiency and process automation.

Employee Relations & Case Management

  • Act as the primary HR contact for all employee inquiries.
  • Independently manage employee relations matters including performance concerns and disciplinary processes.
  • Coordinate and document workplace accommodations in accordance with human rights legislation.
  • Administer statutory leaves including medical and parental leaves.
  • Manage short-term and long-term disability claims in partnership with benefits providers.
  • Support workplace investigations and maintain thorough documentation.
  • Escalate high-risk or complex matters appropriately.

HR Projects & Organizational Initiatives

  • Lead and execute HR-related projects and organizational initiatives as directed.
  • Support policy development, program enhancements, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Coordinate cross-functional initiatives requiring HR input, documentation, and compliance oversight.
  • Manage timelines and deliverables for assigned strategic HR projects.

Benefits, Payroll & Compliance

  • Administer benefits enrollment, changes, and annual renewals.
  • Liaise directly with benefits providers and brokers.
  • Provide accurate employee data and documentation to Finance in support of payroll processing; payroll administration remains with Finance.
  • Maintain compliance with BC Employment Standards and applicable workplace legislation.

Workplace Health & Safety

  • Lead the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC).
  • Manage WorkSafeBC claims and required reporting.
  • Maintain safety records and ensure regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of progressive HR experience in an operational HR role.
  • Demonstrated hands-on HRIS administration experience; BambooHR strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience independently managing employee relations, accommodations, leave administration, and disability claims.
  • Strong working knowledge of BC employment legislation and human rights requirements.
  • Experience supporting payroll coordination and benefits administration.
  • Exceptional documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential matters.
  • CPHR designation or active pursuit considered an asset.

Requirements

  • Full-time, in-office availability in both Richmond and Burnaby.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel between office locations.
  • Ability to independently manage employee relations matters, accommodations, and disability claims.
  • Strong written documentation skills with the ability to maintain clear, defensible HR records.
  • Sound judgment and ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Comfortable handling difficult conversations and complex workplace situations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
