AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. AWS GCNA Organization

The AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) Organization is looking for a Network Development Engineer to join our Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) team. Network Development Engineers partner with our broader Infrastructure organization on configuration standards and tools, and collaborate with Systems and Software Engineers to ensure fast, smooth roll‑out of new designs and products, and also deploy and sustain networking software tools.


AWS GCNA is the backbone that connects the global AWS network. Focused on controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world. GCNA is responsible for building and designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between data centers and customers.


Key job responsibilities

  • Design network designs, services and deployment procedures that solve for many requirements.
  • Decide on the projects that best support the team’s mission together with the leadership team.
  • Design ahead of customer or technology needs, creating and defending High Level Design (HLD) and Low Level Design (LLD) documents, influencing technology roadmaps, constructing and testing solutions, and providing support to the teams that will deploy and operate these designs.
  • Create and automate deployment processes that increase quality and velocity.
  • Work closely with internal customers on designs/solutions; bringing those designs/solutions from concept to production.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of IP networking fundamentals and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols as well as network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills.
  • 5+ years of experience with major internet routing protocols; specifically, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, RSVP and ISIS in a large enterprise environment.
  • 5+ years working with major network operating systems such as Cisco IOS and/ or Junos.
  • 3+ years experience with Unix/Linux skills and the ability to script in Python, Perl, shell.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Masters in Computer Science, MBA, or equivalent experience.
  • Senior or Lead Engineer experience at other organizations.
  • Expert-level certifications (e.g. CCIE, JNCIE) a plus.
  • Expert-level scripting and or automation skills in a network environment.
  • Software development/programming skills are a plus.
