Department Context
The WBG Corporate Solutions Department (ITSCO) is focused on the digital transformation of essential corporate services to ensure WBG operations are seamless, resilient, and future-ready. Uniting digitalization roadmaps, experience design, process optimization, application delivery, systems management, and technology modernization across some 170 products and services, the department links business ambition with operational excellence-from intuitive employee experiences and precision payroll to data-driven decision making, intelligent automation, and AI enablement. Operating from multiple locations in a global delivery model, the team seeks to combine disciplined strategic planning with focused roadmaps, agile product delivery, design-forward innovation, digital engineering, automation, and AI to produce solutions that are engaging, impactful, and efficient. The goal is a unified, OneWBG corporate backbone-streamlined, connected, and adaptive-that empowers leaders, staff, partners, and shareholders with the processes, capabilities, and insights to advance the WBG's mission at scale.
Unit & Team Context
The Corporate Digital Backbone unit creates an autonomous digital backbone for the orchestration of data, transactions, processes, and insights across the diverse corporate portfolio, e.g. application modernization, technology debt reduction, efficient data exchange, advanced analytics, enterprise integration, automated business processes, and agentic-AI. The Analytics for Corporate team within this unit delivers AI-first data and analytics capabilities for corporate functions that enable data-driven decision-making consistently and efficiently across all products in the corporate portfolio.
Duties and accountabilities:
Role Scope
The ITS Corporate Solutions (ITSCO) department provides specialized IT services to the World Bank Group's (WBG) most critical corporate functions. We partner with the World Bank, IFC, and MIGA to deliver robust, secure, and innovative technology solutions supporting Budget, Procurement, Human Resources, the Board, External Communications, Travel, Ethics & Internal Justice, and many more. Given the sensitivity and complexity of these functions, ITSCO ensures that corporate data is a strategic asset, driving operational efficiency and informed decision-making across the WBG.
The Associate Senior Data Engineer role for the Analytics and Corporate team specifically ensures that corporate data systems are resilient, high-performing, and tailored to the unique reporting and analytical needs of our diverse corporate clients.
The Associate Senior Data Engineer is responsible for guiding the development and maintenance of the data infrastructure that supports the organization's data-driven decision-making processes. As a subject matter expert in Data Engineering, this role guides the development of ETL processes, optimizing data retrieval performance, and collaborating with stakeholders to gather and understand data requirements, ultimately supporting the organization's data integration and transformation initiatives.

• Routinely leads complex projects and integrates work of other (often multi-disciplinary) professional staff, contributes to strategy, analysis and policy formulation, and provides advice to functional management in area of specialization to contribute to functional area's long-term objectives.
• Identifies and evaluates overall systemic issues and analyzes complex issues.
• Collaborates and partners with internal stakeholders on matters of strategic importance for the area of focus and department, may interact with external stakeholders to support department objectives.
• Provides guidance, coaching, and training to more junior staff within the job area, serving as an authoritative expert and key resource for other professionals and leadership.
• Requires comprehensive and in-depth expertise either in a broad area of specialization or in a narrowly specialized field.
Key Responsibilities
Data Quality Management
• Promotes and ensures the integrity and quality of data through validation and cleansing processes
• Manages the implementation of automated testing and monitoring solutions to proactively identify and resolve data quality issues
• Ensures all data engineering activities and solutions comply with WBG enterprise standards for data governance and management to maintain data security and regulatory alignment.
Database Management
• Manages data pipelines to efficiently gather, process, and store large datasets from diverse sources such as HR, Procurement, and Budget systems
• Promotes the maintenance of data infrastructure and data platforms, addressing issues promptly to reduce downtime
Collaboration with Agile Teams
• Participates in agile ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, stand-ups) to align data engineering efforts with project goals
• Manages collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and product owners to understand data requirements and deliver solutions that drive business value
Documentation and Reporting
• Defines and maintains comprehensive documentation for data processes, pipelines, and systems to facilitate knowledge sharing
• Ensures the documentation of engineering processes and workflows to promote knowledge sharing and compliance

Selection Criteria
• Education & Experience: Master's degree and 8+ years progressively responsible experience; or Bachelor's with 10+ years; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field is preferred.
• Recommended Certifications: Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate, or AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate or Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional, SAFe DevOps (SDP)
• Advanced Data Infrastructure Expertise: Proven ability to architect and maintain enterprise-scale data pipelines that integrate information from multiple business systems (HR, Procurement, Budget) while ensuring high performance and minimal downtime.
• Data Quality Leadership: Demonstrated experience implementing automated testing and monitoring frameworks that proactively identify data issues before they impact business decisions, with a track record of maintaining data integrity across complex environments.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration Skills: Ability to translate technical concepts for business stakeholders and work effectively in Agile teams, partnering with data scientists, analysts, and product owners to deliver solutions that drive measurable business value.
• Strategic Problem-Solving Capability: Experience identifying systemic data challenges and developing long-term solutions that align with organizational strategy, including contributing to data governance policies and enterprise standards.
• Mentorship and Technical Leadership: Track record of guiding junior engineers and leading multi-disciplinary project teams, serving as the go-to expert for complex data engineering challenges and best practices.
• ETL and Data Transformation Mastery: Deep expertise in building, optimizing, and documenting ETL processes that support data-driven decision-making, with comprehensive knowledge of modern data platforms and regulatory compliance requirements.
