Overview At PNNL, we focus on innovative scientific research across various disciplines, including National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. Within this framework, our AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) Division employs advanced technologies and expertise to tackle complex data and analytic challenges. We encourage motivated individuals who wish to contribute to national security and scientific advancements to apply for our internship program. Responsibilities The National Security Internship Program (NSIP) at PNNL invites applications from enthusiastic undergraduate students eager to engage in meaningful research. You will face complex problems in fields like national security and energy, applying cutting-edge research and advanced data solutions. The internship offers hands-on experience in coding, participation in cyber competitions, visualization design, and big data optimization. Internships will begin in cohorts starting in May or June 2026. Diverse Focus Areas: Math, Stats, and Data Science:
Utilize mathematical modeling, computational statistics, and theoretical frameworks to solve intricate challenges. Relevant fields include Applied Mathematics, Machine Learning, and Operations Research.
Applied AI Systems:
Create robust models that convert complex data into actionable knowledge, enhancing decision-making in operational environments. Key disciplines include Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision.
Foundational Data Science:
Develop new algorithms and solutions to improve data comprehension for decision-making processes. Relevant fields include AI, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing.
Software Engineering & Architectures:
Design scalable, cloud-based software solutions for large data analytics, leveraging best practices in software development including Agile methodologies.
Human Centered Computing:
Combine interactive visualizations with advanced analysis techniques to enhance user insights through effective design and engineering practices.
Operational Readiness & Enablement:
Focus on creating high-quality, scalable cloud solutions while adhering to software development best practices, encompassing project management principles.
Positions are based in Richland or Seattle, WA. Work is primarily on-site, with remote arrangements considered only in exceptional circumstances. Qualifications Must possess a high school diploma or GED or higher.
Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at an accredited institution.
Must be enrolled in at least six credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.
Preferred Qualifications: Disciplines of interest may include Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, and various other related fields.
Additional Information This position requires access to sensitive systems and information; hence, U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
