The Principal Data Engineer to lead the architecture, development, and optimization of our data infrastructure. In this senior-level role, you drive the transition from an on-premises SQL Server and SSRS environment to advanced, cloud-based solutions and Tableau. You bring strategic vision, strong leadership, and deep technical expertise to build and scale robust data platforms. Your experience in the healthcare sector ensures data solutions meet the highest standards of performance, compliance, and usability.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Lead the architecture, development, and optimization of scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and integrate data from diverse sources. Design and implement enterprise-level data warehouse solutions and data models to support advanced analytics and BI. Spearhead the migration of SQL Server databases and SSRS reports Provide recommendations and assist in implementing Self-service reporting solution Develop and enforce best practices for building and maintaining Tableau dashboards and transitioning legacy reporting tools to modern platforms. Implement comprehensive data quality frameworks, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and completeness across data assets. Conduct performance tuning and root cause analysis to resolve data pipeline and infrastructure issues. Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions. Maintain detailed technical documentation, including data dictionaries, flow diagrams, and SOPs. Evaluate emerging technologies and AWS services to drive innovation and continuous improvement. Participate in strategic planning, architectural reviews, and incident management for data systems. Ensure strict compliance with data governance, HIPAA, and ePHI security standards. Serve as a mentor and technical lead for junior engineers and cross-functional collaborators. Perform other related duties as assigned to support data infrastructure and team objectives. Required Skills/Abilities:
Proven experience in a senior or principal data engineering role. Expert-level SQL skills and deep knowledge of relational databases, including SQL Server and PostgreSQL. Advanced ETL/ELT development experience using SSIS, Python, or equivalent technologies. Deep understanding of data warehousing, dimensional modeling (star/snowflake schemas), and analytics architectures. Expertise in Tableau and SSRS, with a demonstrated ability to modernize legacy reporting. Proficient in Python, C#, and advanced SQL development for data processing and application. integration. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex initiatives. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage stakeholders across business and technical teams. In-depth knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare data security best practices. Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays in alignment with company and industry demands Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field; proven equivalent experience may be acceptable in lieu of degree. 7-10 years of hands-on experience in Data Engineering, with a strong emphasis on cloud-based architecture and infrastructure. Demonstrated experience with containerized data applications and large-scale system deployments. Preferred Skills/Abilities:
Experience with Debezium or similar data capture (CDC) tools. Hands-on experience with large-scale data migrations Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation. Proficient in Git and modern CI/CD workflows for automated deployment and version control. Knowledge of healthcare data standards and protocols (e.g., HL7, FHIR). Work Environment/Physical Requirements
Home-based office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.
