JOB SUMMARY:

As a Paint Technician, the employee will be working with our acrylic polymer liquid and solid raw materials to mix and make batches of paint as per our customer specs. They will be required to match a variety of custom colours by eye as well as using color-matching software. They will be operating blending and mixing equipment and following chemical recipes. Understanding of how raw materials affect paint's hiding’, viscosity, and tint requirements is critical in this role.


As a Quality Control Technician, the employee will take samples of various dry and wet products and perform quality checks. Products include construction grouts, solvent based cures and sealers, water-based cures and sealers, acrylic coatings and asphaltic products. Maintaining laboratory equipment, compiling records and data sets, and coordinating with third-party auditors are crucial in this role.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Use a forklift to gather raw materials, use various size scales and sheer blenders/mixing equipment
  • Identify which formula to use based on final colour requirements. Add small amounts of tints as required.
  • Label and package finished products
  • Work off colour swatches, colour charts and drawdown cards to match colours by eye
  • Use BYK colour matching software
  • Make both small (8 lbs) to large (3000 lbs) batches of product
  • Apply tinted products to various forms of concrete for QC checks
  • Prepare, mix and segment both solvent base and water based product for testing
  • Perform various testing functions in a lab and record results. Share any anomalies to management.
  • Mix grout products and test/apply as required.
  • Sample and measure asphalt-based products for conformity to standards
  • Pull retains and investigate customer complaints
  • Reviewing product requirements in MRP software, establishing proper EBQs
  • Create product work orders
  • Liaising with third-party auditors to ensure we are compliant with certifications
  • Package and lift and pails up to 70 lbs.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITITES:

  • Create custom colours based off customer-supplied wet samples
  • Manage expired product list, test samples of possible shelf life extension
  • Help package orders for shipping
  • Create batch numbers, labels and shop paperwork as required
  • Perform additional duties and assignments as directed by management.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow strict formula sheets and measure items accurately
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures (Winter-cold and Summer-hot)
  • Ability to operate a forklift
  • Ability to operate mixing/blending equipment
  • Ability to input and track data in Excel and Word


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical Diploma in Chemistry, Engineering, Science or Similar
  • Previous experience working with flammable/combustible solvent-based products an asset
  • Experience in colour matching by eye required
  • Forklift experience required; experience with drive-in racking is a plus
  • Experience with acrylic copolymers an asset
  • Experience with textured paint additives a plus
  • Previous experience with verifying solids content, liquid densities and viscosities
  • Previous experience in manufacturing asphaltic and cementitious products
  • Ability to input and track data in Excel


CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:

  • Previous forklift experience is required
  • Must successfully pass in-house forklift training and certification
