NATURE & SCOPE OF POSITION
- Reporting to the head of Supply Chain, the Materials Manager is responsible for all aspects of material flow including negotiating, procuring, planning of materials in support and the production planning schedule for our manufacturing facilities. This position is also responsible for developing and managing supplier relationships, managing, guiding and directing Purchasing and Planning staff, and maintaining the MRP system.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITY
- Develop, implement, and manage sourcing strategies that are aligned with company goals. Including the identification of risk in either supply and/or suppliers and implementation of counter measures to mitigate risk.
- Take initiative and ownership to improve process effectiveness/efficiency by partnering with key stakeholders within the business.
- Design and implement supply chain strategies which will be adaptable to changing market conditions, new business opportunities, and cost reduction.
- Source suppliers to minimize spend and reduce lead times as well as manage inventories to company targets both financial and space driven.
- Create requests for proposals as well as negotiate with, and evaluate potential vendors.
- Schedule and expedite the procurement of assigned parts and materials in accordance with the production plan and management objectives.
- Create the monthly and weekly production plans for all manufacturing facilities and ensure work orders are clear to build.
- Communicate effectively with Shipping and Receiving to ensure they are aware of all incoming orders maintaining a receiving calendar to spread deliveries in line with receiving resource capabilities.
- Help establish standard costs on assigned materials and control price variance.
- Control the inventory of the materials in accordance to planned levels.
- Negotiate sample requirements from suppliers.
- Maintain and review the approved vendor list.
- Effectively deal with issues of negligence from suppliers – poor quality, incorrect shipments, and failure to meet the intended ship dates.
- Promote a team environment interfacing with functional areas such as Production, Engineering, and Quality, to resolve material issues through effective communication.
- Prepare reports as required for Management.
- Assist in creating or updating new operating procedures, job descriptions, training requirements etc., as necessary.
- Monitor department’s key performance indicators, implement changes, and correct deficiencies as required.
- Promote Positive Employee Relations through Open Door policy as well as plans to develop team members.
- As a member of the leadership team, foster a management style that supports excellence, personal growth and mutual respect through communications, and practices that promote employee involvement and commitment at all levels.
- Maintain cost out template and drive cost potentials to meet /exceed leadership targets.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- Post-Secondary Education in a business discipline.
- PMAC or other Purchasing designation or certification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of procurement and planning experience and a minimum of 5 years management experience in Materials/ Purchasing preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Procurement experience in medical devices is a definite asset.
- Adept in contract negotiation and capable of supporting strategic initiatives to further enhance the strength of the department as well as ability to drive long term strategic partnerships.
- Must possess knowledge of Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures and techniques as they relate to materials management.
- Good knowledge of ISO Health Canada, MDSAP and/or FDA is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required.
- Ability to work in a fast paced team environment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Must be proficient in written & spoken English.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Strong knowledge of personal computer, MS Office and other office equipment.
- Knowledge of computerized ERP/MRP system, Business Central and AS-400 an asset.
