Core Responsibilities
- Emergency Trauma Management: The primary role in a trauma setting is to assist in the diagnosis and control of life-threatening hemorrhage using minimally invasive techniques. This is particularly crucial for hemodynamically stable (or even select unstable) patients to potentially avoid or optimize open surgery.
- Consultation Services: Providing timely consultation to emergency medicine physicians, general surgeons, and other specialists regarding diagnostic and therapeutic options for trauma and non-trauma patients.
- Patient Care: Conducting pre-procedural patient assessment and post-procedural management and follow-up, often in a clinic setting.
- Diagnostic Imaging: In a community hospital setting, the IR may also be required to interpret general diagnostic imaging studies (X-rays, CTs, MRIs, ultrasound) as part of a mixed practice.
- Quality Improvement: Participating in the hospital's quality monitoring and improvement programs, including the review of trauma cases and adherence to protocols.
FACILITIES & SUPPORT:
- Clinic/Facility: 10-chair infusion center, onsite lab and pharmacy, two additional infusion centers on campus (1 general/1 rheumatology)
- Imaging/Diagnostics: PET scanning, 64-slice CT, 3-D mammography, breast MRI, high-definition endoscopy/bronchoscopy
- Tumor Boards: Bi-weekly for breast, PCC, GI, and ENT
- Surgical Referrals: Includes breast, colorectal, and vascular; Bone marrow transplants referred to Charleston (MUSC or Roper St Francis)
- ACGME Accredited: Medical students, Family Medicine Residency, transitional year, Sports Medicine Fellowship program
- Research & Trials: Currently no active clinical trials; aligned with Duke for access to approximately 450 protocols
- Currently undergoing submission to become accredited by The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
- Duke Health Affiliate in Cancer: The only regional partner offering world-class oncology care.
