About Us
We are seeking an experienced Fleet Mechanic – A-Tech (Master Technician) to join our maintenance team. This is a senior-level position responsible for advanced diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on a mixed DOT-regulated fleet. The A-Tech serves as the top technical resource in the shop and supports fleet reliability, safety, and compliance.
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Fleet Mechanic to perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on company vehicles including school buses, motorcoaches, and support vehicles. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
General Accountabilities
Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic vehicle systems
Perform advanced troubleshooting using OEM software, scan tools, and diagnostic equipment
Repair gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering, suspension, HVAC, and emissions systems
Diagnose and repair electrical systems, wiring, CAN bus, and accessories
Perform preventive maintenance services according to manufacturer and fleet schedules
Conduct DOT, NYS, and internal safety inspections
Identify and correct safety defects to ensure vehicles are road-ready and compliant
Accurately complete work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance documentation
Serve as a technical resource and mentor for B-Techs and C-Techs
Communicate repair status, timelines, and parts needs to management
Recommend maintenance strategies to reduce downtime and improve fleet reliability
Respond to road calls and perform emergency repairs when needed
Operate company equipment and tools in a safe and professional manner
Collaborate with drivers and management to address vehicle concerns
Perform lot & facility maintenance as needed
Keep the lot clean, free of debris, snow, or hazards
Maintain signage, cones, barriers, and designated parking zones.
Report safety concerns, vehicle damage, or hazards immediately to management.
Assist with organizing tools, equipment, and supplies.
Job Qualifications
7+ years of fleet or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance experience
Strong diagnostic skills across mechanical and electrical systems
Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or ability to obtain if required)
Own professional hand tools
Ability to read wiring diagrams, service manuals, and technical documentation
Strong safety awareness and attention to detail
Preferred:
ASE Master Technician or multiple ASE certifications
Experience in DOT-regulated environments (school bus, transit, NEMT, or commercial fleet)
Prior lead technician or mentoring experience
Skills
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to work in varying weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs
Basic computer skills for maintenance record-keeping
