Purpose
The Principal Piping Engineer provides senior technical leadership and subject matter expertise in piping engineering across medium to large, complex capital projects. This role serves as a discipline authority within Worley, responsible for technical excellence, mentorship of piping engineers, and ensuring piping design solutions meet project, regulatory, safety, and quality requirements. The Principal Piping Engineer works closely with project leadership, discipline leads, and clients to deliver high-value engineering outcomes across the full project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
Serve as the Piping Engineering discipline lead on medium to large projects, providing technical direction and oversight to teams of piping engineers and designers.
Lead the development and approval of piping engineering philosophies, specifications, design criteria, and technical standards.
Provide technical assurance across all phases of project delivery, from concept and FEED through detailed design, construction support, and commissioning.
Act as a senior technical authority for complex piping layouts, materials selection, stress analysis inputs, constructability reviews, and regulatory compliance.
Ensure piping designs meet Worley standards, client requirements, applicable codes, and statutory/regulatory obligations.
Project Controls & Stakeholder Engagement
Work collaboratively with Project Management, other engineering disciplines, and clients to deliver projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Support project planning activities, including development of scopes of work, engineering estimates, execution strategies, schedules, and staffing plans.
Monitor progress of piping deliverables against approved budgets and schedules; proactively identify risks, constraints, and opportunities for improvement.
Apply change management processes and contribute to scope, cost, and schedule impact assessments as required.
Provide technical input to proposals, tenders, and pursuit activities.
Quality, Governance & Continuous Improvement
Promote engineering excellence, quality assurance, and consistent application of Worley systems, processes, and tools.
Participate in technical reviews, design assurance processes, and constructability and operability reviews.
Stay current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and evolving piping design methodologies.
Contribute to the development and improvement of discipline procedures, standards, templates, and work practices.
People Development & Collaboration
Mentor, coach, and provide technical guidance to intermediate and senior piping engineers.
Support the development of technical capability and succession planning within the piping discipline.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance engineering culture.
Coordinate resource requirements with the Piping Engineering portfolio or functional leadership team.
Qualifications – What You Will Bring
Technical & Industry Experience
Extensive experience in piping engineering within EPC, EPCM, consulting, or operating environments.
Demonstrated experience acting as a piping discipline lead on medium to large, technically complex projects.
Strong knowledge of piping design principles, materials, specifications, layout development, and construction interfaces.
Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including but not limited to:
ASME / ASTM piping codes and standards
ABSA requirements for piping design and registration in Alberta
CSA pipeline standards (considered an asset)
Familiarity with multi-disciplinary project environments and interfaces with process, mechanical, structural, electrical, and civil disciplines.
Experience providing engineering support during procurement, construction, and commissioning, including MRQs, technical bid evaluations, RFIs, and site support.
Stress analysis experience and exposure to complex piping systems is considered an asset.
EPC/EPCM project delivery experience is an asset.
Digital & Tools
Proficiency with piping engineering and design tools, as well as standard engineering software and MS Office applications.
Experience working within integrated engineering data environments and document control systems is considered an asset.

Education, Accreditation & Eligibility
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta (APEGA) or eligibility for immediate registration.
Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status.
