Purpose
We are currently seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer – Rotating Equipment to provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise across complex greenfield and brownfield projects. This role is a senior technical authority within the Mechanical discipline, specializing in rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, blowers, and fans.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer – Rotating Equipment is accountable for the technical excellence, safety, quality, and delivery of rotating equipment engineering across projects and plays a key role in mentoring engineers, supporting discipline leadership, and providing expert input into design, procurement, vendor engagement, and site execution. This position operates at a high level of autonomy and influence and supports project delivery teams, clients, and internal stakeholders across a wide portfolio of energy, resources, and industrial projects.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a senior technical authority and subject matter expert for rotating equipment across projects, providing technical leadership and oversight.
Provide safe, sustainable, and technically sound engineering solutions for rotating equipment systems in both greenfield and brownfield environments.
Lead and/or perform complex engineering studies, equipment selection, specifications, data sheets, technical bid evaluations, and vendor technical clarifications.
Provide expert technical review and approval of rotating equipment design deliverables produced by project teams.
Serve as a technical escalation point for complex rotating equipment issues, troubleshooting, and non-conformance resolution.
Support and advise Mechanical Leads and Project Engineering Managers on rotating equipment strategy, execution planning, and risk management.
Interface with vendors and OEMs as a technical authority, including participation in technical alignment meetings, factory acceptance tests (FATs), and site support activities.
Provide mentorship, technical coaching, and professional development support to intermediate and senior mechanical engineers within the discipline.
Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of discipline standards, specifications, tools, templates, and best practices related to rotating equipment.
Support workshare activities with global execution centers, ensuring technical consistency, quality, and adherence to project and company standards.
Participate in constructability reviews, HAZOPs, model reviews, and site visits as required.
Contribute to project planning, effort estimation, resourcing strategies, and execution approaches for rotating equipment scope.
Support proposal development, technical risk reviews, and client presentations related to rotating equipment engineering.
Act as a technical representative for Mechanical / Rotating Equipment in multidisciplinary project environments and client engagements.
Technical And Industry Experience
Extensive experience delivering rotating equipment engineering for major projects in industries such as:
Oil & Gas (upstream, midstream, downstream)
Refining
Gas processing
Hydrogen (blue/green)
Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS)
Energy transition and decarbonization projects
Deep technical expertise in rotating equipment design, selection, specification, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
Strong experience supporting brownfield revamps, debottlenecking projects, equipment replacements, and reliability improvement initiatives.
Highly conversant with applicable industry codes and standards, including but not limited to:
API 610, 611, 614, 617, 618, 672, 673, 675, 676
ASME and related mechanical standards
Strong understanding of reliability engineering, operability, maintainability, and lifecycle considerations for rotating equipment.
Proven ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and to interface with clients, vendors, construction teams, and operations personnel.
Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to engineers at various stages of their careers.
Advanced proficiency with standard engineering tools and software (e.g., MS Office Suite, rotating equipment calculation and sizing tools, engineering document management systems).
Required
Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA (or eligible for immediate registration).
Extensive and relevant mechanical engineering experience, with a strong focus on rotating equipment in industrial facilities.
Preferred:
Demonstrated experience acting as a technical authority or lead SME for rotating equipment on large, multidisciplinary capital projects.
Experience supporting proposals, business development activities, or discipline technical governance initiatives.
