Junior Designer (Fixed-term Contract)
The salary range for this position begins at $51,425 and will be determined based on experience. This posting is for an existing vacancy and is actively accepting applications.
Changing the world, one book at a time.
As a team of dedicated book-loving professionals, we discover, shape, and share content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations around the globe, ensuring that new and established voices are heard.
We're looking for a Junior Designer to join our Design Team on a fixed-term contract.
This is an entry-level opportunity to learn, grow, and get hands-on experience in publishing. This contract runs through October. It's an ideal role for an early-career designer who loves books, typography, and thoughtful design—and wants real experience inside a publishing environment.
Do you have a sixth sense for good book design and what captures a reader's attention in bookstores, online, and across social media platforms? Are you eager to learn, and thrive on feedback? Are you a creative problem solver who obsesses over the fundamentals of design and typography? Do you enjoy illustrating, photography or other forms of creativity?
If this describes you, consider joining us as we shape the next chapter of our design team's brand and creative identity at Penguin Random House Canada.
Your contribution to the story:
At Penguin Random House Canada, we house an award-winning team of designers who are passionate about having the best-dressed books for our authors, readers, and retailers. In a production environment, you will assist across a full range of books and support our design team across multiple stages of book design and production, gaining insight into the full publishing workflow while learning directly from experienced designers.
Reporting to the Creative Director, you will collaborate with production and editorial, helping to design the best books for some of the world's most renowned Canadian authors. In this role, you will receive mentorship from senior designers and exposure to every stage of book design—from concept to print. Your work will directly contribute to live publishing projects and real books on shelves.
What you'll do
Prepare files, review and correct proofs with senior team support
Format and upload titles (all formats) into a proprietary system
Assist with scanning, reprints, second formats, and mark-up corrections
Create information icons, maps, and design elements in Illustrator; assist with font and image research
Potential to design covers and/or mechanicals (layout design), and seeing projects through to production stage
Communicate with production/editorial teams and attend design meetings
Experience and knowledge you'll bring (qualifications):
Degree/diploma in design, visual arts, or related field and/or print design experience
Good understanding of prepress
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) on Mac
Strong layout, typography, and attention to detail
Excellent organization, communication, and follow-through
Ability to juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Curiosity, flexibility, and a strong desire to learn
Assets include experience with Procreate knowledge, Illustration/photography skills, hand lettering skills, an interest in arts and crafts or other creative hobbies, bibliophile tendencies and typography obsession.
An inclusive approach to your work, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
A proactive mindset coupled with an ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team.
Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
And of course, a love for books
We are actively seeking to add team members from communities with lived experiences of marginalization and underrepresentation. We respect and value each individual and their lived experiences and are committed to creating a more diverse team and establishing a culture of belonging. If you self-identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community or another marginalized group, we strongly encourage you to apply.
