Job Overview

The Bartender prepares beverages and/or serves food promptly and courteously while maintaining high standards of quality, presentation, and consistency. This role plays a key part in creating an inviting atmosphere while maximizing guest satisfaction and revenue opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet guests warmly as they approach the bar and promote house specialties using up-selling techniques to maximize revenue.

  • Prepare beverages according to established pouring standards and drink recipes to ensure consistency and cost control.

  • Coordinate food service with restaurant operations when applicable for bar and lounge guests.

  • Monitor guest behaviour and alcohol consumption; ensure responsible service of alcohol and notify management of any incidents involving excessive consumption.

  • Verify identification when the age of a guest requesting alcoholic beverages is in question.

  • Alert management of any service or safety concerns and assist with service recovery to ensure guest satisfaction.

  • Set up the bar with all required liquor, mixers, ice, garnishes, glassware, and supplies before service.

  • Perform pre- and post-shift duties including replenishing stock, preparing garnishments, emptying/filling ice bins, and maintaining cleanliness.

  • Requisition necessary supplies and maintain accurate inventory of unused liquor and beverages.

  • Secure all liquor before, during, and at the end of the shift.

  • Handle cash and credit transactions accurately; obtain, count, and secure bartender bank; balance cash drawer at the end of shift.

  • Inspect bar area daily for cleanliness and ensure all equipment is functioning properly.

  • Sweep, mop, and sanitize bar surfaces, counters, stools, chairs, tables, and equipment as required.

  • Promote teamwork and quality service through effective communication with kitchen staff, servers, and management.

  • Perform other duties as assigned while following all Company and Marriott Brand Standards.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Basic reading, writing, and math skills.

  • Knowledge of liquor brands, beer, wine, champagne, non-alcoholic beverages, glassware, preparation methods, and garnishments.

  • Formal bartending training preferred.

  • Must meet provincial legal age requirements.

  • Fluent English required.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds (barware, bottles, carts, etc.).

  • Ability to remain standing for extended periods.

  • Frequent movement within the bar, lounge, kitchen, and other F&B areas.

  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting.

Other
  • Communication skills are frequently utilized when interacting with guests, servers, kitchen staff, and supervisors.

  • Alcohol awareness certification and/or valid food handler certification as required by provincial regulations.

  • Reading and writing abilities are used when taking orders, describing beverages, and completing documentation.

  • Basic math skills are required for handling cash and credit transactions.

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Work Area: Bar, lounge, kitchen, and other F&B outlets.

Health and Safety
  • Follow all safe work procedures outlined in departmental policies, including the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety regulations in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Ministry of Labour.

  • Report all workplace injuries or illnesses immediately to a supervisor or manager.

  • Participate in health and safety initiatives and bring forward concerns to the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
