Relief Veterinarian (General Practice & Wellness)
Position Overview
The Relief Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to companion animals on a temporary or as-needed basis, supporting the hospital’s general practice and wellness services. This role is ideal for a licensed DVM seeking flexible scheduling while delivering compassionate, evidence-based veterinary care in a collaborative clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive wellness and preventive care, including physical exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and client education
* Diagnose and treat common medical conditions in small animals
* Perform routine soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures, as applicable to hospital standards
* Develop and implement diagnostic and treatment plans utilizing available in-house and external resources
* Accurately document medical records in accordance with hospital protocols and legal requirements
* Communicate effectively with clients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, prognoses, and preventive care
* Collaborate with veterinary technicians, assistants, and support staff to ensure efficient patient flow and high standards of care
* Adhere to hospital policies, safety protocols, and applicable state veterinary regulations
Qualifications
* Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school
* Active veterinary license in the state of practice (or ability to obtain)
* DEA license and state-controlled substance registration (or ability to obtain)
* Strong clinical and diagnostic skills in small animal general practice
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to adapt quickly to new teams, workflows, and hospital systems
Schedule & Engagement
* Flexible, short-term, or per diem assignments
* Shifts may vary by hospital needs and may include weekdays and/or weekends
* No long-term commitment required unless mutually agreed upon
Work Environment
* General Practice and Wellness-focused companion animal hospital
* Team-oriented setting with trained technical and support staff
* Modern medical equipment and standard diagnostic capabilities
