The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is currently seeking a Resource Laboratory Technologist to provide comprehensive technical expertise regarding testing, consultation and education. They will support a day shift, Monday to Friday. The Resource Laboratory Technologist will work in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory within the Division of Genome Diagnostics.
The Division of Genome Diagnostics (Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics and Microarray, Clinical Fibroblast Service) specializes in advanced genetic testing for rare disorders and cancers affecting the paediatric population. Genome Diagnostics is also the first lab to establish a clinical genome-wide sequencing service in Canada, following the culmination of a successful pilot project that enabled testing for eligible paediatric and adult patients in Ontario.
As a valued member of a large, collaborative team comprising 100 laboratory and technical staff, you will play a key role in our complex testing pathway, which utilize the latest technology in next generation sequencing and informatics, karyotype imaging and analysis, and automated sample preparation. This is a dynamic role in a rapidly advancing field, with diverse learning and growth opportunities beyond routine testing, such as test development, case review participation, and teaching.
The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.
Here's What You'll Get To Do
Provide specialized expertise regarding testing, calibration, operation and maintenance of automated and manual testing.
Participate in the development and evaluation of new methodologies and technologies.
Provide training to technologists, students and clinical fellows.
Assume an active role in workload activity measurement, quality control and quality assurance programs to support the effective operation of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM).
Ensure procedure manuals are maintained and reflect current laboratory practice, and safety guidelines are followed.
Perform analytical tests, assess, interpret and report results
Prepare and issue of samples/product/specimen
Maintain accurate laboratory records and records of testing
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment
Practice and perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures with accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs)
Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take remedial action, and document action, within their scope of practice, as required
Report failures, issues & action taken to immediate supervisor
Assess results against diagnosis to ensure relevant results correspond with known patient data, as appropriate
Recognize abnormal and critical results, and takes appropriate actions according to the established SOP, as required
Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
Participate in the development, implementation and support of the policies, processes and procedures within the Quality System to support the effective operation of DPLM
Follow health and safety procedures as per DPLM and Hospital guidelines.
Perform quality control and documents control results
Review and monitor daily QC results
Recognize unusual quality control results, take remedial action and document outcome
Report ongoing or unresolved QC issues to immediate supervisor
Here's What You'll Need
Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
Bachelor of Science MLS is preferred
Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) Previous experience with DNA extraction, RNA extraction and LIS an asset
Comprehensive technical skills and knowledge with a minimum 5 years' recent experience in Molecular Genetics
Demonstrated troubleshooting, decision making and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be self-motivated
Demonstrated ability in the development of management skills, supervisory skills and professional growth
Demonstrated ability to be a team player who is self-directed and adaptable to new technologies and processes
Solid computer skills an asset
Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives
