Development Accountant / Project Accountant

About the Role

Onekaland is seeking a detail-oriented and commercially minded Development Accountant / Project Accountant to support the financial management of our real estate development projects. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate project costing, financial reporting, and budget control across multiple developments.

This is a remote position, with a preference for candidates based in the Lower Mainland, BC, to support collaboration with local stakeholders and projects.

The ideal candidate brings strong accounting expertise, project finance experience, and the ability to collaborate closely with development, construction, and leadership teams.

Reporting to the CFO, your responsibilities include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete all time-sensitive deliverables accurately, including draw processing, deposit collections, and sales reconciliations.
  • Conduct bank reconciliations on a timely basis and ensure the closure of each period efficiently.
  • Record GST and Utilities refund cheques and assist with filing GST and Empty Homes Tax.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly project updates and reports on project budgets, tracking and reporting on budget variances.
  • Liaise with the development team, vendors, and other staff as required.
  • Liaise with Project Quantity Surveyor & lenders to provide project cost information and review draft reports.
  • Prepare monthly working papers.
  • Ensure invoice amounts are within contract values.
  • Process Journal Entries as required.
  • Reach out to lenders for Banker Acceptance (BA) rate /Canadian Dollar Offered Rate (CDAR) rates and assist with registering Home Proection Office (HPO) and Travelers.
  • Enter statements of adjustments on closings and general contractor invoices.
  • Ensure all invoices are properly coded, and development fees are accurately calculated and paid promptly.
  • Process cheques and EFT payments to vendors. (Process payables)
  • Assist with preparation of ad hoc reports, special projects, responsibilities, and other duties as assigned by the Manager.
  • Assist with the year-end audit.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3–7 years of experience in development, construction, real estate, or project accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of project costing, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (preferably Procore, Qyickbooks, and Yardi) and Excel (medium to advanced level)
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA.
  • Experience in real estate development or construction industry.
  • Familiarity with ERP or project management systems.
  • Based in the Lower Mainland, BC (preferred but not required).
