Data Engineer

Adastra is seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer with strong SQL expertise and hands-on experience working with large-scale data environments. This role will focus on designing, developing, and optimizing data warehouse solutions, partnering closely with business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable data models and pipelines. The ideal candidate has strong technical depth, cloud experience (preferably AWS), and excellent communication skills to bridge technical and business teams effectively.

Location: Across Canada & USA (Remote) 

Status: Contract 

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable data warehouse solutions and data pipelines
• Write complex, high-performance SQL queries for data transformation, analysis, and optimization
• Work with large datasets and implement best practices for data modeling and warehouse architecture
• Partner with business users and stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions
• Build and maintain ETL/ELT processes to ensure data accuracy, quality, and availability
• Optimize performance within cloud-based data platforms
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including analytics, engineering, and business units
• Ensure data governance, security, and best practices are followed

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field 
• 5+ years of hands-on Data Engineering experience 
• Strong hands-on SQL expertise (advanced querying, optimization, performance tuning)
• Experience working with Data Warehouse (DWH) concepts and large-scale data environments
• Solid understanding of data modeling (star schema, dimensional modeling, normalization/denormalization)
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Hands-on experience with AWS Redshift and/or AWS Glue
• Ability to work directly with business users to gather and clarify requirements
• Strong communication skills — both technical and non-technical
• Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines
• Knowledge of data quality, governance, and best practices

Nice to Have

• Working knowledge of Python for data engineering or automation
• Experience with additional AWS services (S3, Lambda, Athena, etc.)
• Experience working with Big Data frameworks
• Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOps practices in data environments
• Experience in Agile/Scrum environments
