About you and this role
Dow is seeking an Analytical Technician to join the Polyethylene Laboratory in Prentiss (Red Deer), Alberta. In this role, you will provide essential analytical support to the site's polyethylene production units by generating accurate, timely data that guides process decisions and ensures final product quality.
You will perform and/or support physical testing on reactor and pelleted polyethylene samples and operate key analytical instruments. You will conduct tests, record results, and report findings using established methods and safe operating procedures to maintain data integrity and reliability.
This is a day role, Monday through Friday (hours to be discussed with the hiring manager). You will contribute to efficient laboratory operations by supporting routine testing and assisting shift technicians, performing preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment, managing chemical inventory and supplies, scheduling lab activities, and completing MLT tasks. You will apply analytical knowledge and sound judgment to help troubleshoot plant issues, support product quality evaluations, and deliver consistent routine testing.
Success in this role requires strong collaboration and communication with Operations and the Poly Analytical team. You will engage closely with multiple stakeholders, making effective teamwork essential. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong problem‑solving skills, communicates effectively, prioritizes learning, and maintains a strong safety mindset with high attention to detail when operating laboratory equipment and handling samples and chemicals.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine physical property and chemical analyses of polyethylene to support process control and ensure product meets specifications.
- Operate, calibrate, verify, and maintain analytical instruments (e.g., MI, density, GC, FTIR) and ensure all measurement systems are in a state of control prior to use.
- Apply QA/QC checks and statistical tools to confirm instrument performance and ensure accuracy, precision, and data quality.
- Troubleshoot and perform maintenance of analytical equipment to resolve issues that impact data reliability or workflow efficiency.
- Generate, interpret, and document analytical results using established methodologies and report findings through LIMS in a timely manner.
- Support development, improvement, and documentation of analytical methods, procedures, and work processes; assist day staff with implementation of new technologies or instruments.
- Perform non‑routine or advanced analyses as needed to support plant troubleshooting or product quality investigations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of lab practices, workflows, and written procedures to enhance efficiency and data consistency.
- Maintain chemical inventory, supplies, and scheduling to support smooth and compliant lab operations.
- Train and mentor lab personnel in analytical methods, instrument operation, and safe work practices; provide shift coverage when required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus a minimum completion of a 2‑year college diploma in Chemical Technology or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 3 years of industry experience in a laboratory, chemical, or manufacturing environment.
- Ability to safely work in a plant environment, meet physical demands, and properly use required PPE and safety equipment. Must be familiar with, or willing to be trained on, safe equipment operation.
- A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including any type of permanent residency support.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a laboratory environment with instruments such as melt indexers, densitometers, FTIR, GC, titrators, or similar analytical equipment.
- Experience with LIMS and common digital tools (e.g., Excel, data entry systems).
- Familiarity with data quality assurance practices, including QA/QC checks, calibration, and instrument verification.

- Collaboration – Works closely with operations and analytical team to solve plant issues and ensure consistent product quality.
- Quality Control (QC) – Applies QA/QC checks, calibrations, and statistical tools to ensure accurate, reliable analytical data for production decisions.
- Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work – Manages multiple routine analyses on a rotating shift, ensuring timely testing, documentation, and equipment maintenance.
- Laboratory Analytical Techniques – Performs physical testing (including GC, FTIR, and polyethylene property measurements) to support production and troubleshoot plant issues.
- Laboratory Safety – Follows and reinforces safety procedures, PPE requirements, and environmental standards to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment.

- For positions based in Ontario, Dow is required by law to include the pay scale that is reasonably expected to represent the pay range for the position. This pay range is specific to the territory of Ontario and accounts for both new and experienced employees with consideration to factors including but not limited to skillset, experience, and sustained job performance (or similar jobs). A reasonable pay range for this position is: $80,040 – $133,320.
