Job Description
Internal Job Title: Bindery Operator (Apprentice)
Job Location: Calgary, AB
Work Type: Permanent, Full-time
Work Model: On-site
Work Environment: Union
Work Hours: Shift (35 hrs/week) – Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 13:00

Salary:
Apprentices begin in Apprentice Class 2 for one year.
Pay starts at 90 percent of the Class Two Bindery Operator rate of $28.56, which is $25.70.
Increases to 95 percent of $28.56 after six months, which is $27.13.
Reaches 100 percent of the $28.56 rate at the one‑year mark.
After completing Class 2, employees may move into Apprentice Class 1 for two additional years. Apprentice Class 1 pay is based on the Class One Senior Bindery Operator rate of $35.59. Apprentices in Class 1 begin at the full Class 2 rate of $28.56 before progressing to the Class 1 percentage steps.
After six months: 85 percent of $35.59, which is $30.25.
After twelve months: 90 percent of $35.59, which is $32.03.
After eighteen months: 95 percent of $35.59, which is $33.81.
After twenty‑four months: 100 percent of the $35.59 rate.
Position Summary
As Bindery Operator Apprentice, you will be responsible for learning to set up, operate, and maintain a variety of bindery equipment—including cutters, folders, stitchers, and perfect binders—to ensure materials are accurately assembled, trimmed, and bound according to specifications.
A fully fledged Bindery Operator performs all those duties and monitors production quality, performs routine mechanical adjustments, troubleshoots equipment issues, and upholds established safety and quality standards. This role requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
Core Responsibilities
Set Up, Adjust & Calibrate Bindery Equipment
Interpret job orders, specifications, and blueprints.
Adjust knives, rollers, clamps, guides, and feeders for the correct size and thickness.
Prepare machinery for folding, stitching, trimming, or gluing operations.
Operate Bindery Equipment
Perform cutting, folding, stitching and binding with the following equipment:
Heidelberg cylinder/letterpress equipment
Polar guillotine cutters
MBO/Stahl folders
Muller Martini stitching equipment
Quality Control
Inspect for misaligned folds, crooked cuts, missing pages, glue issues
Ensure products meet design and durability standards
Make adjustments on the fly to keep production consistent
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Clean, lubricate, and maintain machines
Replace worn parts such as cutting blades
Perform minor repairs and troubleshoot feeding or alignment issues
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Legally eligible to work in Canada.
Fluent in English (read, write, speak).
Able to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Secret level security clearance.
Mechanical aptitude.
Basic computer literacy.
Able to stand/walk for prolonged periods of time.
Able to bend, crouch, reach.
Able to lift/carry up to 60 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a manufacturing environment
Experience working with automated or semi-automated manufacturing equipment
Any experience with bindery equipment is strong asset
