The Crane Manager, Mechanical ensures delivery of the highest quality equipment and facility maintenance, repair and technical services while meeting all applicable standards and requirements in terms of safety, quality, timelines and cost. The Crane Manager, Mechanical provides direction to the Foremen and Longshore personnel to meet short- and long-term production and maintenance goals related to asset maintenance, efficiency, and profitability.

In this position you will:

  • Ensure that the requirements of each working shift are fully met in an efficient and safe manner in accordance with safety regulations and health and safety policies.

  • Oversee the overall efficiency of quay crane and facility mechanical operations, including coordinating the various activities of different groups to maximize the efficient utilization of labour, equipment and resources while ensuring the safe, reliable and cost effective operation of all equipment and assets.

  • Enable the best possible level of communications within the terminal teams. 

  • Provide excellent personnel management, including hiring, training, discipline and off-boarding, to ensure that the Company's needs and requirements are adhered to.

  • Ensure safe working practices are adhered to and promote safety in all aspects of the maintenance process.

  • Direct and drive performance management culture within the team ensuring that staff meet their targets in line with the business needs.

  • Positively drive agreed initiatives, propose new initiatives and adopt a sense of continuous improvement.

  • Plan and schedule preventative, corrective and day to day maintenance of heavy equipment including Quay Cranes and other container handling equipment. 

  • Support and maintain implementation of computerized maintenance management system (Maximo), with intention to become a local Superuser.

  • Development and implementation of the Safety and Environment Program documentation and training.

  • Participate in safety programs and attend Safety Committee meetings.

  • Responsible for communicating maintenance plans and schedules to terminal staff and working with operational requirements.

  • Manage performance of maintenance personnel including day-to-day interaction with ILA Business Agents.

  • Identify and solve problems and issues on a daily basis.

  • Report and correct unsafe conditions and actions.

To this role you will bring:

  • A university degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Self-starter with a positive, hands-on approach and the ability to work in a high-pressure environment as part of a team to meet operational and maintenance needs/deadlines.
  • Proven commitment, reliable work history and flexibility to meet requirements of a 24/7 operation.
  • An excellent manager of people with well-formed motivational skills, including solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills, including the ability to work with all departments and levels.
  • Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.
  • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives.
  • Comprehensive understanding of container terminal equipment and maintenance requirements, this includes thorough knowledge of modern reliability and maintenance best practices, including IT-based asset management systems.
  • Good working knowledge, including troubleshooting skills with electric motors, gearboxes and hydraulics, and training or general experience in structural maintenance.
  • Advanced computer skills, including MS Office, computerized maintenance management systems and industrial control software.
  • Outstanding report writing and analytical skills.
  • A flexible team player who is able to work as required and willing to adapt to change.
  • Ability to leverage employee knowledge to develop alternate solutions and share key learnings with others.
  • Complete knowledge and understanding of WCB, environmental and government regulations as they relate to employee and company compliance; personal safety, chemical handling, and WHMIS. 
  • Fluent in English
  • Experience working in a safety-focused environment with excellent understanding of Health and Safety legislation and the ability to effectively communicate these values to the workforce.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an Manager or Supervisor in a fast moving Maintenance or Engineering environment, preferably in a unionized setting, where you have developed superior mechanical aptitude.
