We are currently seeking a full-time, experienced Senior Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring at least 10 years of proven experience in civil construction estimating, with a strong focus on sewer, watermain, stormwater, earthworks, and roadworks projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare accurate, detailed, and competitive cost estimates for sewer, watermain, stormwater, earthworks, and roadworks projects.
Review, interpret, and analyze project specifications, drawings, tender documents, addenda, and scope changes.
Conduct thorough quantity take-offs for materials, equipment, and labour across multiple scopes.
Prepare and maintain detailed cost breakdowns for labour, materials, subcontractors, and equipment usage.
Prepare comprehensive bid submissions and while adhering to strict deadlines
Solicit, review, and negotiate pricing from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitiveness.
Monitor tender opportunities and maintain an active bid calendar.
Develop and submit professional bid proposals, ensuring compliance with tender requirements and submission deadlines.
Identify and assess project risks and incorporate mitigation strategies into estimates.
Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client consultations.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and site supervisors to ensure estimates align with actual construction methods and schedules.
Track and analyze bid results, market trends, and historical project data to improve future estimating accuracy.
Assist in value engineering initiatives to find cost-effective construction solutions without compromising quality.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of municipal and provincial tendering processes, OPS standards, and construction codes.
Provide mentoring and guidance to junior estimating staff, sharing best practices and technical expertise.
Qualifications & Skills:
Minimum 10 years of estimating experience in civil construction, with proven expertise in:
Sewer, Watermain & Stormwater – familiar with mainline trenching, manholes, water & wastewater installations municipal underground infrastructure, pipe materials (PVC, concrete, ductile iron, HDPE), deep excavation, trench safety, manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, bypass pumping, stormwater ponds, culverts, and treatment devices; knowledge of OPS and municipal standards.
Earthworks – familiar with grading, cut/fill diagrams, contour plans, mass haul diagrams, site grading, excavation, backfilling, compaction, cut-and-fill calculations, haul distances, trucking logistics, material disposal, geotechnical report interpretation, and erosion control measures.
Roadworks & Topworks – road subgrade preparation, granular base installation, asphalt paving processes, lift thickness and compaction requirements, curb and gutter installation, sidewalks, multi-use paths, decorative concrete finishes, traffic control, pavement markings, signage, and final surface restoration.
Strong proficiency in blueprint and specification interpretation, quantity take-offs, cost analysis, and tender compliance.
Ability to perform value engineering and identify alternative construction methods to reduce costs while maintaining quality.
Skilled in risk assessment and incorporating mitigation strategies into estimates.
In-depth knowledge of market pricing for materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractors.
Proficiency in Excel, Bluebeam, ACAD, MS Word, and Scheduling Software Primavera
Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related discipline preferred.
Relevant Ontario certifications such as:
Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) – OACETT
Gold Seal Certification in Estimating – Canadian Construction Association
P.Eng. designation in Civil Engineering (an asset)
WSIB Health & Safety Awareness Training (Ontario)
Knowledge of Ontario Provincial Standards (OPS) and Ontario Building Code (OBC)
Strong interpersonal skills – works effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment.
Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, subcontractors, clients, and stakeholders.
Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving ability, and accountability for results.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
Ability to work effectively under pressure.
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary range: $130,000 – $180,000 annually (based on experience and qualifications)
