Telecommunications Designer
Join Our Engineering Team
We are currently seeking a Telecommunications Designer to join our Engineering Team. This role involves the creation of telecommunication design concepts and preparing detailed drawings in AutoCAD for construction and client projects. The position requires close collaboration with Senior Designers, Field Services, and the Permitting team to ensure the timely and accurate completion of project cycles.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare design and construction packages for various FTTx and RF projects, including buried or aerial permits, optical or RF design, and SpatialNet updates from concept to completion.
- Review engineering plans and scope of work documents to fully understand site-specific project requirements.
- Develop and prepare detailed design packages, including permits, schematics, powering plans, and Bill of Materials (BOM) for new area builds and upgrade/rebuild projects.
- Create detailed plans with specific installation and construction notes, addressing project restrictions and potential hurdles to construction delivery.
- Respond to design requests, utilizing field conditions, GIS, and client-provided software to prepare cable (e.g., splice packages), conduit, and infrastructure designs with minimal supervision.
- Provide guidance to the Field Services and Permitting Lead on any permit requirements, including buried and aerial applications, specialty crossings, or internal permits.
- Adhere to provided guidelines to ensure that client design and construction standards are maintained.
- Perform quality control on work plans, identifying and addressing minor issues, or collaborating with the originator to resolve major concerns.
- Ensure that Design and Construction packages are completed according to the established deadlines.
- Identify methods for designing plant changes with minimal impact to the system and customers, while reducing construction costs and ensuring design quality.
- Create and validate detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) lists.
- Collaborate with technical leads, field teams, customer planners, designers, engineers, and permitting teams to establish workable solutions.
- Offer support to civil teams, responding to inquiries as needed.
- Participate in meetings with customers to discuss or review project scope, construction methodology, and implementation strategies.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by your manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Diploma in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
Experience:
- 2-5 years of telecommunication design experience (required).
- Experience with FTTx, Forced Relocates, HFC, Specialty Crossings, and Structures (preferred).
- Knowledge of Telecommunications Coax, Copper, and Fibre design and permitting.
- Experience in detailed planning and design of OSP networks for various projects, including new builds and overlays of SFU/MDU serving area concepts.
- Experience working in telecom or related engineering environments, with a focus on design and cost estimating for telecom projects.
- Familiarity with client design architectures, specifications, standards, and topologies.
Skills:
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD 2D, including efficient use of Paper Space/Model Space.
- Strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and respond to changing priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Capable of quickly grasping new concepts.
- Analytical and detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills to develop business relationships.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
Software Knowledge:
- ArcGIS or QGIS (preferred).
- AutoCAD (1+ year preferred).
- Drafting (1+ year preferred).
- Telecommunications design (2+ years required).
Other:
- Valid driver's license.
- Fluency in English (both written and oral).
PREFERRED/ASSET EXPERIENCE:
- Optical or RF design, as well as SpatialNet (preferred).
- Powering Plans and Bill of Materials (preferred).
- Drafting experience (1+ year preferred).
