The Role
We're looking for someone who loves designing data models and getting their hands dirty with data — not just writing requirements for others to execute.
This is a foundational role where you'll centralize and standardize fragmented data initiatives across the organization. You'll own the vision for how data is structured and utilized to build products that directly benefit customers.
This role is ~70% hands-on technical work and ~30% product thinking. You'll personally design schemas, build data models, and create the data architecture that powers the platform — while collaborating with the VP of Product on product strategy and customer value.
Reports to: VP of Product
What You'll Do
Hands-On Data Work:
Design and implement data models, schemas, and data dictionaries that standardize messy municipal and infrastructure data from diverse sources
Build processes to clean, enrich, and transform unstructured public sector documents into structured, queryable datasets
Work across SQL and NoSQL paradigms to optimize for scalability, data quality, and performance
Develop data transformation pipelines and dataOps workflows to move from small-scale operations to production-grade systems
Define data governance standards and ensure data integrity across the platform
Product Collaboration:
Partner with the VP of Product to translate data capabilities into customer-facing features
Ensure every new data point adds meaningful value and creates a seamless customer experience
Prioritize data structure improvements aligned with product roadmap and business needs
Work cross-functionally with engineering, data science, and business stakeholders to deliver data-centric products
What We're Looking For
Required:
2+ years of experience as a Data Analyst, Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, Software Engineer, or equivalent role with demonstrated data ownership
Strong hands-on experience with data modeling, schema design, and database architecture — you've personally built data models, not just defined requirements
Deep technical understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases, including when to use each and their tradeoffs
Experience standardizing, cleaning, and enriching data from multiple disparate sources
Proven ability to work with messy, unstructured data and transform it into structured assets
Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills — you can work with engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders
Nice to Have:
Experience with modern data stack tools (dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, etc.)
Background in or exposure to product management principles
Experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Python or other scripting languages for data transformation
Familiarity with data governance and data quality frameworks
Prior work with public sector, municipal, or infrastructure data
Compensation & Benefits:
Base salary: $80,000 - $110,000 (commensurate with experience)
Minimum 10% annual performance bonus (can exceed based on company/team performance)
Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits
Professional development and education budget
Interview Process
Initial screening call with CQ Search Group
30-minute intro call with client team
Technical interview (hands-on data modeling discussion)
Cultural fit conversation
