The Food Impact Network Research Associate (FIN RA), reporting to the Sustainability Manager, will assist with the analysis and reporting of Dalhousie's food and plate waste data. Responsibilities include coding plate-waste images, analyzing food service and audit data (including automated scale data), drafting reports and summaries for internal and public audiences, collaborating with sustainability and research teams, and creating visual outputs such as infographics. Potential deliverables include a white paper, news articles, and comparative analyses with external data sources. The successful candidate must have experience with data analysis.
About the Project
This role is co-funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) project "Transitions through partnerships for sustainable diets: Food procurement, placement, and possibilities" aimed at promoting more sustainable diets and the adoption of Canada's Food Guide. This project has over 15 partners from institutions (universities and hospitals) from across Canada, where Dalhousie is one of four study sites. This project directly aligns with Dalhousie's Sustainable and Healthy Food Plan, which aims to enhance access to plant-based and sustainable food options, such as Fair Trade and Marine Stewardship Council Seafoods. Additionally, we invest in educating our community through various educational programs, such as the "Cool Foods" initiative, which collaborates with dining services to enlighten individuals about the advantages of sustainable food choices.
Duties and Responsibilities
Analysing and evaluating photos depicting food waste on platesto estimate quantities
Analysis and write-up of plate waste and food waste audit results (including comparison with automated data from Gordon's scales)
Analysis of plant-based meal volume data from Food Services
Drafting a report on Dal's contributions, including incorporation of survey results
Potential outputs:final report and orwhite paper and Dal News (or Office of Sustainability news page)
Collaboration with SM and FIN researchers
Development of an infographic summarizing key findings
Analysis of food waste data from other automated scales (outside of study site)
Requirements/Qualifications
Knowledge of sustainability concepts and practices, emphasis on food and agriculture;
Strong data analysis skills, working with Excel and the Microsoft Office 365 Suite;
High levels of attention to detail with a thorough and contentious approach to data collection and management;
Experience delivery community engagement education programming and/or social marketing;
Excellent communication (verbal and written), public speaking, interpersonal and organizational skills;
Experience with Canva is an asset;
Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada;
Must be a full-time student;
Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback.
Working Conditions
This position will require working in a typical office environment at hybrid capacity, with in-person engagement activities at various meal halls and buildings across campuses.
Hours 5 Part-time employment (7 hours/week) from March 1 to May 1, 2026, AND full time (35 hours/week) from May 4, 2026, to August 21, 2026. Flexibility in start date.
Pay Starting wage at $18.00/ hour + 4% vacation pay.
