The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a premier junior hockey league and a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). With 23 Member Clubs across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, the WHL provides an elite development path for young hockey talent while delivering exciting, community-based sports entertainment. The WHL's head office, located in Calgary, supports the league's strategic, operational, and financial functions.
Position Summary
The WHL is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to join our Finance team, reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration. This role is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of the league office, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with internal controls and external regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles, excellent organizational skills, and a collaborative mindset.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare and post journal entries, bank reconciliations, and general ledger reconciliations
Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, including invoicing and payment processing
Track team-related payments and obligations
Support month-end close including preparation of working papers and variance analysis
Maintain financial records and supporting documentation in accordance with audit and regulatory requirements
Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes
Prepare GST filings and ensure compliance with applicable tax laws
Work closely with clubs to support reporting, invoicing, and financial inquiries
Support year-end audit and liaise with external auditors as needed
Contribute to process improvement initiatives and internal control enhancements
Qualifications/Requirements
Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating strong accounting knowledge and competency
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in full-cycle accounting
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
Exposure to Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-For-Profit Organizations is an asset
Discretion and professionalism when handling confidential information
Passion for sports and an appreciation for the values of junior hockey is a plus
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to effectively communicate financial results to various stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, while maintaining high level of accuracy
Expertise and comfort with technology platforms including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, MS Teams, or equivalents
