Search Solutions Engineering Lead

In this exciting role, you'll become the technical guide for our Search Core team, spearheading innovative implementation strategies and software delivery for our state-of-the-art search platform. You will be at the forefront of designing and enhancing data pipelines and core services using Java and Python, ensuring that we deliver fast, scalable search experiences across Kroger's digital platforms. As a key player, you will collaborate with the Search Architect, product management, data engineering, and machine learning teams to create resilient, observable services. Your leadership will set engineering standards and mentor fellow developers through design reviews, implementation, and production support, while ensuring our search platform remains performant, reliable, and easy to extend. Key Responsibilities: Develop a high-quality codebase, lead design discussions, and navigate complex architectures. Implement technology strategies within defined teams, aligning with our technology roadmap. Oversee enterprise standards in operations, security, and application development. Provide technical leadership to fuse project objectives with strategic company goals. Explore innovative technologies to enhance our core technology base. Present actionable insights and cost/benefit analyses to leadership. Drive analysis of existing technology to recommend improvements. Mentor team members in software development principles and practices. Draft and refine architectural diagrams and design documents. Qualifications: Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field. 5+ years of lead experience in building complex software and automation systems. Proven track record in designing and delivering large-scale, high-quality systems. Hands-on experience in software or infrastructure development, including design patterns and code structure. Strong knowledge of industry trends and competition. Deep expertise in at least two of these areas: infrastructure design, application development, APIs, cloud services, database management. Understanding of network and security architecture. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to think strategically and contribute to long-term planning. Desired Skills: Experience fostering an inclusive team environment. Proficiency in building solutions with elastic architectures, preferably in Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform. Strong programming skills in Java and Python for developing scalable backend services and data pipelines. Familiarity with search technologies such as Elasticsearch or Solr, and an understanding of semantic embeddings and ranking algorithms (a plus). Experience with data streaming frameworks and processing in data engineering. Hands-on experience with GCP services and CI/CD practices. Proven ability to implement observability solutions for critical services. Experience with performance optimization and secure coding practices.
