Position Overview
Leads, coordinates, and supervises a team of staff with specialized assignments (Professional Responsibility and Bursaries) to provide quality services to members. Participates in the planning and budgeting processes of the Union. Ensures successful implementation of strategic and operational plans.
Key Responsibilities
1. Responsible for specialized servicing and professional practice assignments, reporting to and advising Directors and, when requested by their Director, advising the BCNU Council on their area of expertise.
- Assumes the primary leadership role in the area(s) they have been assigned and is responsible for the effective and efficient overall functioning of their assigned area(s), specialties, staff, and budget. Assignments may include but are not limited to:
- Working closely with Directors and Managers to create an overall strategy and plan for BCNU as it relates to professional practice and related member services; implementation of strategic and operational plans and participating in bargaining and negotiations.
- Provides leadership and oversees conference preparation and delivery.
- Develops and manages relationships with employers and external agencies (i.e., Regulatory Colleges, Schools of Nursing, HEABC, Ministry of Health Representatives etc.) to ensure effective representation of BCNU members.
- Represents BCNU on provincial committees.
- Creates cross-team/ department opportunities for collaboration.
2. Participates in the budget and planning processes of the Union.
- Makes recommendations to the Manager, PPA on budget items and staffing levels for the annual budget.
- May participate with the BCNU Council in annual strategic planning, assist and advise the Directors on the annual operations plans.
3. Coordinates, supervises, and provides leadership to a team of Officers and other staff who work collaboratively to address BCNU's initiatives in an effective and timely manner.
- Responsible for their own technical assignment and coordinating, supervising, and providing leadership to Professional Practice Officers and administrative support staff. This includes strategizing with team members on the most effective way to address membership issues and promote professional practice.
- Develops work objectives, establishes guidelines and standards, identifies, and incorporates improvements.
- Coordinates with Ratios and Research teams on shared projects.
- Orientation and monitoring of new hires and development of individual staff work plans based on organizational and departmental priorities. Provides employees feedback regularly and evaluates performance.
- Assesses workloads and adjusts assignments within the team; requests relief staffing when needed.
- Monitors and assesses work performance, caseloads, and response timelines, develops work and education plans, and reports problems and solutions to the Manager and/or Director; responds to BCNU member complaints about department staff.
- Coordinates vacation leave requests and resolves scheduling conflicts within the team. Coordinators are responsible for resolving staff issues consistent with BCNU policies and guidelines and in consultation with the Manager and/ or Director. Coordinators may initiate progressive discipline measures if required and communicate with the Manager and/or Director regarding such.
- May participate in staff selection.
- Works closely with the Manager to develop and mentor staff.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have:
- College or University education in an approved Social Science, Industrial Relations, Legal and/or Nursing program or an equivalent combination of education and experience as described below. A Master's degree is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability and progressive experience (5-7 years) dealing with professional practice concerns, collective agreement administration, and nursing licensing matters. Familiarity with research methodology. Nursing experience is preferred. BCCNM registration or eligibility for registration is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for coordinating, supervising, and providing leadership to a team of professional and clerical staff. Demonstrated team-building skills, ability to think creatively with a strong problem-solving approach. Supervisory skills with formal training would be an asset.
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships within the team and between team members and work collaboratively with all team members, elected officers of the BCNU and BCNU members. Formal courses in conflict resolution would be an asset.
- Exceptional communication skills, including positive experience in dealing with all levels of an organization such as management, co-workers, and support staff. Strong writing and presentation skills.
- Strong understanding of and ability to manage change.
- Experience in developing positive relationships with management from employers and external agencies (i.e., Regulatory Colleges, Schools of Nursing, HEABC, etc.).
- Demonstrated knowledge of nurses' employment issues, minimum nurse-to-patient ratios (mNPR) in BC, and the general environmental conditions of nursing. A thorough understanding of and commitment to trade union philosophy and public health care.
- A willingness to travel at short notice and carry a valid driver's license.
