Job Description
Our client, a leading educational institution in Halifax is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join their dedicated finance team. This is a contract role with a strong potential to transition into a permanent position , ideal for a skilled individual keen to grow their leadership and technical accounting experience as part of a strong team. 
Key Responsibilities for the Job:
  • Assist in managing day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll/benefits, and general ledger activities
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes
  • Prepare and review financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements
  • Support the development and maintenance of internal controls and financial procedures
  • Support process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on financial reporting and strategic initiatives

  • Experience & Attributes for Success:
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or other related field, coupled with 3 - 5 years' of full cycle accounting experience
  • CPA designation (completed or in progress) strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting standards
  • Experience with accounting/ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Sage, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Proactive and outgoing demeanor with the ability to partner effectively with operational teams
  • Adaptable and resilient in a fast-paced, multi-company environment
  • Excellent communication skills to present financial information clearly to all stakeholders
