We're a small software company that builds tools for businesses who buy and source products from online marketplaces. Our current web presence includes a marketing/corporate site on our root domain (WordPress) and a web application on a subdomain ) that provides search and alert functionality for marketplace listings.
We're now planning a new initiative: generating large volumes of curated product listing pages designed to rank in Google for long-tail product search queries — think individual item pages, category pages, and browse results at scale. The goal is to capture organic search traffic from casual shoppers and retail buyers searching for specific products, and monetize through affiliate commissions.
**We've already done significant competitive research** on the dominant player in this space (a well-established site with 17+ years of domain authority, millions of indexed pages, and ~20M monthly visits across multiple country domains). We have detailed analysis of their SEO signals, technical implementation, content strategy, structured data, sitemap architecture, and vulnerabilities. We need an expert to validate our analysis and, more importantly, help us make a critical structural decision before we start building.
**The core question:** Where should these programmatic SEO pages live?
Our options include building on the existing web app subdomain (which already has some public-facing pages with JSON-LD structured data, sitemap, and a framework ready for ISR/SSG), creating a new subdomain, routing through the root domain via subdirectory (reverse proxy between WordPress and ), or launching an entirely separate domain.
**What we need from you:**
1. **Review our competitive analysis** of the dominant competitor — confirm or challenge our findings and assumptions
2. **Audit our current site structure** — evaluate how our existing domains, subdomains, and tech stack are set up from an SEO perspective
3. **Evaluate the architecture options** — pros, cons, and realistic impact on time-to-rank for each approach, given our specific situation
4. **Deliver a written recommendation** with:
- Recommended domain architecture and reasoning
- How each option impacts our timeline to compete
- Analytics/reporting separation approach (we need to track affiliate SEO traffic separately from software product traffic)
- Technical implementation considerations
- Risks or tradeoffs we may not have considered
**Ideal candidate:**
- Proven experience with **programmatic SEO at scale** (thousands to millions of dynamically generated pages — product aggregators, directories, marketplace sites)
- Strong background in **domain/subdomain/subdirectory architecture decisions** with real examples of outcomes
- Experience with **affiliate or marketplace SEO** (eBay, Amazon, or similar product aggregator sites)
- Familiarity with ** or modern JavaScript frameworks** from an SEO perspective (not just WordPress/Shopify)
- Comfortable with **structured data / JSON-LD**, sitemapindex architecture, crawl budget management at scale
- Can think strategically about competing against a high-DA incumbent, not just run audits
**This is a consulting engagement, not ongoing SEO management.** We have the development team to execute — we need the right strategic direction before we build.
