Senior Manager, Accounting – Finance (Full Time Permanent)


The Role and Opportunity

The Canadian Mental Health Association – Toronto is seeking a Senior Manager, Accounting to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Chief Finance Officer, this position leads and develops the accounting team, ensuring smooth day‑to‑day operations and the delivery of timely, accurate financial reporting. The Senior Manager, Finance will also champion process improvements and strengthen financial systems as the organization continues to grow and evolve.

Hiring Salary Range: $91,360 - $100,114

Hours of Work: 35 per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Accounting Team, including Payroll, in alignment with organizational policies.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of all financial information and reporting.
  • Monitors and controls the assets of CMHA Toronto, ensures that management controls are in place and utilized at all times 
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Manage month end and year end close processes, ensuring timely, accurate reporting in accordance with Canadian GAAP (and related guidelines)
  • Oversee preparation and filing of HST/GST returns in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Manage relationships and reporting requirements with financial institutions.
  • Lead year end audit activities and coordinate all required schedules with external auditors.
  • Serve as the business owner for the finance ERP (e.g., NetSuite), including chart of accounts governance, system controls, and reporting automation.
  • Perform additional duties related to the effective operation of the Finance function.
  • Operational Functions
  • Collaborate with Financial Reporting, Budget, and other teams to enhance financial policies, procedures, and business rules.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, ensuring timely payments and efficient collections.
  • Provide organization wide guidance on financial accounting policies and procedures.
  • Act as subject matter expert on Ontario Health Reporting Standards (OHRS) and support compliance across the organization.
  • Collaborate with Financial Reporting and Budgeting, and other teams to enhance financial policies, procedures, and business rules.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, ensuring timely payments and efficient collections.
  • Provide organization‑wide guidance on financial accounting policies and procedures.
  • Act as subject matter expert on Ontario Health Reporting Standards (OHRS) and support compliance across the organization.
  • Support additional operational needs to ensure effective delivery of finance and accounting services.
Experience & Education Required  

CMHA Toronto's ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field 
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of general accounting experience 
  • Minimum two (2) years of people management experience 
  • Proven working experience as Accounting Supervisor, Accounting Manager, or Finance Manager. 
  • Expert understanding & knowledge of accounting principles (Canadian GAAP), practices, standards, laws and regulation
  • Understanding of legislation related to Canadian charities
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, complex formulas)
  • Experience with Great Plains and other financial systems as well as familiarity with ERP platforms such as NetSuite or Business Central (asset)
  • Strong time‑management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and delegating effectively
  • Proven ability to lead and develop high‑performing teams through change
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities
