Law Enforcement Operations are split into two main branches:
• Entry operations: CBP officers process incoming international travelers arriving at U.S. ports of entry, customs brokers submit documentation on behalf of their clients (importers/exporters) which may require additional processing prior to clearance. They inspect cargo, securities, and conveyances or passengers in order to determine compliance with applicable import/re-export regulations such as duties/taxes payable.
The goal is always compliance verification rather than enforcement under normal circumstances; however there could potentially arise scenarios under criminal law jurisdiction where penalties would involve legal action against violating individuals/entities involved.
