Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.
The Intern, Finance (Controllership) will provide support in the day-to-day accounting operations, month-end close process, and financial reporting for Seaspan Shipyards and Seaspan ULC. This role will collaborate with a variety of teams across Seaspan Shipyards. The ability to clearly communicate, attention to detail, excellent people skills, flexibility, and adaptability in a demanding environment with competing priorities are essential for this role. This role is ideal for students looking to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges in a dynamic environment. This role reports to the Manager, VSY Accounting.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you'll do
- Prepare journal entries to support the month-end close process.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly management reports.
- Monthly reconciliation of various balance sheet accounts and maintenance of working papers.
- Under the guidance of the Manager, VSY Accounting, help to develop and/or maintain detailed process and procedure documentation where necessary.
- Perform additional ad-hoc analysis and other duties as assigned.
What you'll bring
- Enrollment in a Finance or Accounting degree program is required.
- Strong understanding of all three financial statements: Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow.
- High level of proficiency in Excel (lookups, pivot tables, index match).
- Experience using an ERP is considered an asset.
- Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication with ability to communicate with others with tact and diplomacy.
- Enjoy a hands-on role and dig into the details.
- Proactive and self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
