Lead Machine Learning Engineer
to join our Risk AI/ML squad, dedicated to crafting advanced models that safeguard our customers and position Coinbase as the most reputable platform in crypto. Your contributions will directly combat fraud, account takeovers, and scams while enabling innovative products like instant guest checkout and Coinbase Cards. This is an engaging, hands-on technical role where you will leverage our state-of-the-art, self-service ML platform to swiftly design, implement, and enhance the models that protect millions of users. What you'll be doing: Own a Critical Risk Domain:
Take complete technical ownership of core areas like Scams or Account Takeover. You'll strategize, design, and lead model development in that domain.
Architect and Design Systems:
Spearhead the design and architecture for new, complex, cross-collaborative risk detection models. This includes feature pipeline design, model selection (e.g., GNNs, LSTMs, LLMs), and high-performance serving.
Drive the Technical Roadmap:
Be the primary technical authority influencing our organization. Collaborate with Product, Ops, and other stakeholders to translate unclear business needs into a precise technical roadmap, defining how we will tackle our challenges.
Mentor and Lead:
Serve as a senior technical guide and mentor for other senior, mid-level, and junior engineers on the team.
Apply Advanced ML:
Utilize modern methodologies (e.g., deep learning, NLP, GNNs, sequence modeling, and LLMs for NLP and conversational agents) to address complex, crypto-specific challenges.
Build Context-Aware Risk Systems:
Design adaptive logic systems that determine the appropriate level of friction for user interactions (such as quizzes, LLM agents, or human reviews), balancing security with user experience.
What we look for: 8+ years of experience in software engineering and/or AI/ML, with a proven history of deploying AI/ML systems in production.
A successful track record of technical leadership, including managing small teams and designing large-scale, collaborative ML systems from the ground up.
A commitment to fostering an open financial system and a strong drive to protect users from fraud and scams.

Extensive expertise in applied AI/ML techniques (e.g., Risk ML, deep learning, NLP, recommender systems, anomaly detection), with experience in Payment Risk, Credit Risk, or Identity Risk / Account Takeover / Scams.
Expert coding skills (e.g., Python) and extensive experience with AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch). Experience building backend systems focusing on data processing or analytics is advantageous.
A collaborative spirit in technical initiatives and contributing to meaningful AI/ML solutions.
Exceptional communication skills, enabling effective conveyance of technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to Haves: Master's / Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or a related field.
Familiarity with contemporary data and AI/ML infrastructure (e.g., Feature Stores like Tecton, Model Serving like RayServe, Apache Airflow, Spark, Kafka).
Experience with Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) or Sequential Models (like LSTMs).
Experience with LLMs (NLP, fine-tuning, agentic systems) or Reinforcement Learning.
Understanding of MLOps best practices, including monitoring and refining production models.
Experience with data analysis and visualization tools.
Job #: GP-RPMLE06US-Q126 Pay Transparency Notice : Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary for this position ranges as follows. Full-time offers from Coinbase include bonus eligibility, equity, and comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)). Base salary range: $218,025 - $256,500 USD.
