The Risk Engineering Platform team at Coinbase is dedicated to safeguarding our platform and protecting millions of users against fraud and financial risks. We create flexible, scalable systems aimed at detecting and preventing fraud in real-time, thereby fostering business growth while prioritizing user experience. Your Role: As a Senior Software Engineer in the Risk Engineering team, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and refining risk detection and mitigation systems that ensure technical excellence, reliability, and significant business impact. You will lead high-influence projects that directly enhance user security and ensure safe platform scalability. Responsibilities: Design and build innovative risk detection systems and vital features, using experienced judgment to navigate complex technical challenges. Independently manage intricate projects from conception through to production deployment. Create actionable roadmaps each quarter in collaboration with engineers, product managers, and senior leadership. Develop self-service options to minimize barriers for legitimate users while effectively blocking fraudulent activities. Optimize security features and processes to prevent scams and improve user experiences. Engage actively in PR reviews and code management while mentoring junior engineers. Respond to incidents of varying severities and contribute to post-mortem evaluations. Work collaboratively with Data Science, ML, and Risk Analysts to deliver proactive models and reactive solutions in response to urgent issues. Technical Excellence: Propose innovative ideas to improve the codebase and system architecture, enhancing developer efficiency. Develop systems that allow the team to produce high-quality results quickly. Identify and implement scalable solutions applicable across the team. Ensure code quality improves with every contribution while maintaining high delivery velocity. Establish processes to detect regressions and enhance visibility on resolving emerging issues. What We Seek in You: Required Qualifications: 2+ years in software engineering with a proven track record of delivering production systems. Strong expertise in at least one frontend framework (React, TypeScript). Experience in building and maintaining distributed systems at scale. Ability to oversee complex projects and navigate unfamiliar systems with some guidance. Deep understanding of software design patterns, data structures, and algorithms. Familiarity with modern development practices such as CI/CD, testing, and monitoring. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in risk management, fraud detection, or financial systems. Knowledge of machine learning models and their real-world applications. Experience with real-time event processing and streaming architectures. Understanding of payment systems (ACH, credit cards, cryptocurrency) and associated fraud trends. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes). Awareness of security best practices and compliance standards. Technical Skills for Frontend Engineers: Proficient in React and TypeScript/JavaScript. Experience with component-based architectures. Familiar with state management solutions. Knowledge of web security best practices. Experience collaborating effectively with designers and product managers. Pay Transparency Notice:
The target annual salary for this position varies based on location: $152,405 - $179,360 USD. Full-time positions at Coinbase also include bonus eligibility, equity options, and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
