Your Mission:

As a Principal Radiation Physicist, you will play a pivotal role in our team. Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  • Supervising and conducting analysis and experiments to support system qualification.
  • Driving the progression of design optimisation.
  • Producing and reviewing radiological safety justifications for innovative design solutions.
  • Leading the development of in-house toolsets aligned with departmental goals.
  • Leading detailed shield design, balancing build requirements with system performance.
Your Skills and Experiences:

Essential:

  • Relevant STEM degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Proven experience with radiation transport codes such as MCNP, MCBEND, or Attilla.
  • Strong understanding of radiation physics.
  • Experience in radiation safety studies and behaviours.
  • Knowledge of radiation metrology.
  • Familiarity with the ALARP principle .

Desirable:

  • Experience in managing technical projects.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Physics & Shielding team is at the forefront of designing and validating radiation shielding for the UK’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet. We engage across various submarine programmes, contributing to:

  • Designing new shields.
  • Assessing design changes during the build programme.
  • Conducting radiation metrology on-board during commissioning.
  • Performing radiological safety studies and developing novel radiation detectors.
  • Enhancing capabilities in radiation damage to electronics.
