The new Communications Advisor will be a member of the Urban Planning and Economy (UPE) Department's communications, engagement and external relations team, which provides integrated services to support the business goals of the department and the City.
Urban Planning and Economy is a forward-looking department that plans, promotes and advocates change that moves this city towards the Edmonton envisioned by the residents we serve. The department leads the way in how we plan for a future Edmonton with a focus on changing behaviour, promoting environmental initiatives and positioning the City as a municipal leader in environment and climate resilience excellence, which requires sustained and strategic communications and marketing efforts. This is where you come in.
What will you do?
- Lead and collaborate with department colleagues on the development of integrated communications and marketing strategies that support the City's environment and climate goals
- Maintain a panoramic view of corporate and departmental issues and priorities as well as City Council, community partners, professional associations and other orders of government, in order to fuel your communications strategies
- Develop and implement content strategies to support public engagement activities and storytelling that celebrates project milestones and successes
- Deliver timely and responsive issues management, crafting powerful key messages, speaking notes and briefing notes that cut through the noise
- Unleash your creativity, using innovative tactics and working with internal and external design, web and creative teams using approved City visual identity guidelines both internally and externally
- Write, edit, review and coordinate a wide array of communications and marketing products, including integrated marketing and communications plans, content strategies, news releases, ads, web content, signage, fact sheets, social media posts, blog posts, stories, newsletters and videos
- Proactively manage media relations activities, including preparing spokespeople for interviews, planning media events, and identifying reputational issues

- University graduation in communications, public relations, or a related field, with two (2) years of progressively responsible experience, including two (2) years in a similar organization
OR - Diploma in communications, public relations, or a related field, with four (4) years of progressively responsible experience, including two (2) years in a similar organization
Skills required for success:
- Comprehensive expertise in mass communication media and internal/external communications planning
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including creating, implementing and evaluating complex communication plans
- Deep understanding of traditional media relations and reputation management
- Exceptional writing and storytelling skills
- Strategic thinking to identify and manage threats to the City's image and brand
- Success in managing competing priorities and meeting unexpected deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Experience collaborating with diverse internal teams like creative, web, and media relations
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
- This position may be eligible for the City's Earned Day Off program.
- Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time.
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
- This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states.

Up to one (1) temporary full-time position for up to 11 months
Hours of Work\: 33.75 hours per week. This position requires the successful candidate to be available for on-call work outside of regular work hours.
