This Part-Time Research Assistant 1 position is based in Prof. Thomas Szkopek's research lab in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled individual to assist with research involving assembly of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) van der Waals heterostructure synthesis, doping, and analysis system. This entails assembly of UHV components including turbo-pumps, vacuum gauges, alkali getter sources, and integration of a cryostat, sample manipulator, and optical beam line for reflection hyperspectral imaging and Raman spectroscopy. Experience with experimental condensed matter physics techniques, optical microscopy/spectroscopy techniques, electronic instrumentation and 2D/van der Waals materials is essential.

Once assembly is complete, Research Assistant will support activities such as:

  • investigate the anomalous enhancement of the G-mode Raman peak of alkali doped monolayer graphene on quartz substrates
  • search for Raman active modes associated with hypothesized Kekule lattice distortions (a relative of the Jahn-Teller effect) of alkali doped monolayer graphene on quartz substrates
  • survey the reflectance spectra of C90 and C100 fullertube crystals before and after alkali doping
  • survey the Raman spectra of C90 and C100 fullertube crystals before and after alkali doping, with an emphasis on determining the electron-phonon coupling constants associated with superconductivity
  • conduct detailed investigation of the afore mentioned physico-chemical phenomena

Responsibilities will include documentation of research protocols, data analysis, and preparation of summary reports suitable for integration into scientific reports.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with experimental condensed matter physics techniques.
  • Knowledge of optical microscopy and spectroscopy methods.
  • Experience with electronic instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with 2D/van der Waals materials.

Before applying, please note that to work at McGill University, you must be both authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.
