Our Ideal Candidate

Allnorth is currently looking for a Quantity Surveyor. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for capital cost estimation and cost consulting services on a variety of project types for new and existing clients.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of a full range of Quantity Surveying and Cost Consulting Services to new and existing clients.
  • Based upon identified scope, develop and present the indirect costs required for Project Proposals to support internal management decisions and present to Clients.
  • Draft estimate plans through evaluation of scope, contract, desired estimate type / quality and time / resources available.
  • Prepare capital cost estimates at various stages of the design process, from conceptual (order of magnitude), feasibility level , appropriation/budget authorization level, through to detailed control baseline estimates. Quantifying the labour, equipment and materials required for construction projects based on benchmarked data, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications. Reviewing available information and coordinating with Technical and Procurement teams to determine assumptions for undefined scope.
  • Developing standardized estimate basis and assumption documentation and establishing pricing structures for estimating across the business.
  • Leading the analysis of cost variances between the different estimate stages and ensuring internal and external stakeholders understand the content of the cost reports and any identified commercial risks.
  • An understanding of the Canadian construction market; maintaining knowledge of market trends to support reporting of commercial implications to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Benchmarking and maintaining new and existing cost data to identify trends, opportunities and use in future estimating.
  • Support Quality Control and Assurance protocols of cost management reports and ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule and execution plan. Identifying and developing strategies to mitigate commercial risks and managing commercial risk register and any contingencies throughout project lifecycle.
  • Supporting Procurement teams with the preparation and issue of RFx packages and commercial evaluation as required, including the identification and quantification of commercial risks.
  • Reviewing change order requests and conducting shadow estimates to ensure accuracy and to support any negotiations.
  • Occasional site visits to perform site inspections to assess and work-in-place for construction work.
  • Coordinating with project teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

What You'll Bring to the Team

  • University Degree or equivalent with minimum of 5 years of experience in Quantity Surveying, Cost Management, or experience in a transferable role type.
  • Working towards a relevant professional qualification or professional qualification obtained: MRICS and/or PQS.
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating large complex Engineering, Procurement and Construction projects in the heavy industrial sector.
  • Experienced with the development of direct costs for all disciplines – Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical, Instrumentation and Automation.
  • Understanding of indirect cost build-up for large heavy industrial projects, including engineering, project management, construction management, procurement services, temporary facilities, owner's costs, etc.
  • Experience with practical application of AACE International Recommended Practices, CIQS Rules of Measurement and industry best practice.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantity takeoffs, statistical analysis, life cycle analysis and management of personnel.
  • Knowledge of construction methods and techniques in area of specialization and have a general understanding of other disciplines.
  • Thorough understanding of cost index and escalation projection sources.
  • Understands and contributes to risk and contingency assessments.
  • Knowledge of Procurement best practise and understanding of contract management.
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills and ability to address a group.
