Job Description:

The Transmission Line Engineer in Operational Engineering is responsible for providing technical expertise, field support, and engineering analysis to ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of AltaLink's transmission line assets. This role supports urgent and emergency repair work, conducts detailed engineering assessments, and delivers technical guidance to field crews, Control Centre operations, and internal stakeholders. The successful candidate will apply strong analytical skills and engineering judgement to maintain system reliability and facilitate positive customer outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for transmission line related events, including investigations, reporting, and presentations.
  • Lead and coordinate transmission line hardware and insulator testing activities to support asset condition assessment, reliability, and compliance
  • Conduct proximity and encroachment evaluations for proposed facilities near AltaLink transmission lines.
  • Monitor and analyze underground transmission line assets to assess performance, identify emerging issues, and coordinate timely actions to maintain reliability.
  • Perform Transmission Line Rating Analysis and generate transmission line ratings in accordance with AltaLink internal standards and ISO requirements to ensure compliance and system reliability.
  • Support short‑term and complex line rating calculations as per AESO requests.
  • Perform compliance audits by evaluating transmission line ratings and PLS‑CADD models.
  • Provide field support for urgent transmission line repairs.
  • Complete transmission line design for urgent repair work and provide design backup during team absences (e.g., vacation coverage).
  • Evaluate transmission line switches to support outage requests from the Control Centre.
  • Perform induction studies to support field crews in executing urgent or complex work.
  • Demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible for immediate registration with APEGA.
  • Minimum 4 years of electrical utility experience; at least 2 years of transmission line design experience is an asset.
  • Strong background in transmission line codes, materials, construction practices, and maintenance for voltages 69 kV and above.
  • Familiarity with clearance requirements and challenges related to 25 kV underbuild or attachments.
  • Proven ability to perform the responsibilities listed above.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, engineering databases, and PLS‑CADD.
  • Strong analytical, risk assessment, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational ability to manage multiple competing priorities and meet strict deadlines.
  • Effective written, graphical, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong internal and external relationships and positively influence stakeholders.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
  • Valid Driver's License as some travel may be required.
  • Demonstrated strong performance and consistent attendance.
